Windows prompts me for credentials when sharing items

I’m sharing files between my desktop and laptop, both on the latest version of Windows 10.

Everything was working fine yesterday, but now I’m being prompted for credentials when I try to access a folder or file on another computer, also when I try to access shared folders on the other computer and access them from this one, so it randomly happens both ways. I shared by right-clicking the folder > give access to > specific people and added "everyone" with read and write or read only.

This should't happen, as I have Password-protected Sharing turned off on both PCs.

I rebooted both and still the same.

If I enter the credentials for an account, I can see the shares.

Also, one of the accounts on both is a Microsoft Account, the same account, I have this account set as Passwordless in Microsoft settings, so I don’t know what password to enter when I’m prompted for credentials, as it’s passwordless!.

I made sure SMB is turned on on both PCs.

I tried some troubleshooting on both:
    - Services.msc: enabled these:
    o Function Discovery Provider Host
    o Function Discovery Resource Publication
    o SSDP Discovery
    o UPnP Device Host

    - Disable ipv6 in the adapter (ncpa.cpl)
    - Allow File Sharing in Windows Firewall Settings
    - Turn windows features on or off > Turn on the SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support

    Any help much appreciated

Windows 10 21H2 on both PCs.

Could you clarify a couple of points for me?

When you say that you are being prompted for credentials, I assume that you mean that this happens when you try to connect to a share on the other computer, right?

Second, how are you sharing the folder? Is it shared to "everyone" or to only specific users?

I think I know what is happening, but I need to verify these details first.

I am responding before getting your response because there is a possibility that I may have to step away for a while.

The following assumes that you are trying to share a folder to "everyone"...

Okay, I think that I know what is happening: You have the folder properly shared, and with sharing permissions set to "everyone" and "Password protected sharing" turned off, anyone on the network should be able to connect to that share. However, in order for this to work, you also need to include "everyone" in the NTFS file permissions. To do this, follow these steps:

    1) Right-click on the folder that you shared and select Properties.
    2) Go to the Security tab and then click on Advanced.
    3) Go to the Permissions tab, click on Add.
    4) To the right of "Principal", click on "Select a principal". Select "everyone".
    5) Set the file permissions you want to allow, click OK, OK, OK.

You should now be able to access the share.

...apologies I didn't express myself correctly, yes it's when I try to access a folder or file on another computer, also when I try to access shared folders on the other computer and access them from this one, so it randomly happens both ways. I shared by right-clicking the folder > give access to > specific people and added "everyone" with read and write or read only.

I checked the folder has read and write permission for everyone, this was automatically added when I shared the folder.

This is now happening randomly, sometimes I'm prompted for credentials and others I'm not. I uninstalled teamviewer as a suspect on both sides and rebooted and it still happens. Same in Safe Mode with Neworkinig.
I think I'll try to reset the Windows permissions to defaults with tweaking.com then restore a restore point then...I don't know...do an in-place upgrade or reinstall Windows.

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Make sure that the NTFS permissions included "everyone" not only for the folder but for all subfolders and files.

I AM NOT talking about share permissions. Sharing a folder DOES NOT automatically alter NTFS file permissions in any way shape or form.

If not comfortable messing with this, create a test folder somewhere and drop a few test files and folders on it. Share it. Experiment with setting the permissions in this test scenario until you have it working reliably and know that you can reproduce the steps on your "real" data.

I’ve shared this folder: C:\users\public\test2 by right-click > give access to > specific people > everyone (read and write)

    Then I’ve added everyone as Full Control by right-click > properties > security > advanced > add > select a principal…

The issue is: when I go to the other computer, which is in the same network (same broadcast domain) and go to File Explorer > Network and click the other computer’s name (or type \\asushome in the run applet)…where asushome is the hostname of the PC in question, a dialog box pops up "Windows Security…Enter Your Credentials (username) and (password)"…if I now I enter the username and pw of a user in the remote PC, I can get in, but I shouldn't be prompted for credentials right?

If you have not done so.

    Open Network and sharing Center
Click on Change advanced sharing settings link from the left panel.
    Expand the All Networks section.
Switch the radial button to Turn off password protected sharing setting
    Click the Save changes button.

    Test from another machine.

Password protected sharing is already turned off.

I'll have to think about this further. There are only two requirements that I can really think of:

    1) The share is shared out to "everyone" and Password Protected Sharing is turned off.
    2) The NTFS file permissions for the folder being shared needs to include everyone. Of course, this needs to be propagated to all files and subfolders and needs to include the appropriate permissions (read, write, full control, as appropriate).

Beyond that, I feel like I'm missing something.

Possibly, the profile needs to be private rather than public?
