    End of landlines?

I keep hearing that landlines are old tech & will soon be gone.
Can someone explain how this will work?
What would I plug my router into without a landline socket?

My landline was removed when I had full fibre fitted a couple of years back, you either plug your phone into a phone socket slot on your router or as I'm my instance BT provided a VOIP phone that just plugs into the normal computer network.

We still have a copper wire connection which requires a PSTN socket in order to connect the router to the line -
there's no fibre connection to my premises & no telephone socket on my router so do I assume that prior to the demise of the landline I will be upgraded to FTTP?

The problem with landlines is that they are very expensive to maintain and to install in the first place, I think there will be a gradual decline in use over time as more and more people have access to a Mobile service. I know a lot of people who no longer have a landline phone and this will become more the norm over time.

The current telecoms system is being converted to fibre optic - with Fibre to consumer becoming a lot more common, especially in metropolitan areas and this will remain even if the landline Phone itself disappears. Where the modern way works to reduce costs is to use Mobile Over-The -Air systems for data transmission, especially in rural areas where laying cables is very expensive, ( even with fibre ). I already have a faster available speed over my Mobile phone than I do over my landline connection, ( where the laying of newer cables is limited due to geographical constraints), and where the cost of cable options is prohibitive this will be a cheaper but still acceptable quality alternative.

I personally never make calls on my landline, as my mobile calls are "Free", I do retain a landline as if I ever need to make an emergency call the landline is geographically tagged to an exact location by the authorities, (and police, fire and ambulance services), so even if the call is not completed the location is known to the relevant service who can find the location of the emergency. Eventually this will be true of Mobile services too, It is possible to do now but is not a default at present

I am also in stand-by mode for new-coming fibre line. Two additional devices in the garage, LAN connection to router, RJ45 connection from router to cordless phone. No more copper wires and sockets... DSL was pretty good and always remind me of old times with dial-up...

Yes, '...landlines are very expensive to maintain
and to install in the first place...'
and so is running a fibre
cable from the nearest green roadside cabinet to my premises, especially since
the copper wire connection is already in place.
I'd welcome FTTP but they're going to have to get their skates on if they
intend to deliver it by 2024.

Yes, in the places where copper is being retired all premises will be swapped to full fibre.

Some of the latest info on the rollout can be found here - Openreach Name 98 New UK Areas for Copper Phone to Fibre Switch - Tranche 7 - ISPreview UK

'I already have a faster available speed over my Mobile phone than I do over my landline connection'.
That's not the case here where the mobile speed is prehistoric.

I assume that Digital Voice requires FTTP (Fibre To The Premises). That would be nice. However, they can keep Alexa.
