Connecting two computers to the Internet

So I bought an Ethernet Cable Switch thinking that this would be a simple way to connect two computers to the internet, one Linux and Windows 10. Nope, not simple. Here is what I bought,,,,,,https://www.amazon.com/CablesOnline-Rot ... 90&sr=8-21
It doesn't do what I thought it would do. So has any body else tried this?
The trouble is Windows 10, something about IP Address of my modem. The modem is an Arris Surf Board. Poking around the internet I ran across an article about using the Command Prompt, using the command ( ipconfig ). I am familiar with a command line in Linux and so have no fear of using command prompt, but want to do it correctly, which is one of the reasons I am using this forum.
    Open to suggestions.

How many ports on the modem is it a modem or modem router? If its a modem it will only give out one IP if its a router it should work if its a modem then you need a router. From cmd prompt type

    Ipconfig /all
Post results from both PCs that will tell use if its a router if its a modem then its dangerous as the PC is live on the net and can be attacked

You need a router, not a switch. your surfboard MODEM gets one IP from the isp. If you want to use a switch instead of a ROUTER, you will need to contact your isp and PURCHASE an additional IP address

Your link got butchered is all, note the extra commas (,,,,,,,,,) before it and how the last part is chopped off (... 90&sr=8-21).

I highlighted it in the screenshot

P.S. This site/forum is not owned, operated or maintained by microsoft. It's only association is that it is a forum for help with a microsoft product, made by individuals, not microsoft.

Your link is simply incomplete. Nothing to do with Microsoft. Human error. This is what you posted:

    Code:
