    Internet speed problem

This is on behalf of my Son. He believes he has an issue with his internet. When he does a speed test Zoopla, it shows everything normal good ping etc. but sometimes when playing games, it gets very laggy, he has one game in particular that displays the connection speed and Ping, and when this issue happens, the Ping value goes very high.

he contacted Virgin, who did a remote test on the router and said all is ok. He upgraded his cable from 50mb to 100mb, initially all was ok bit now the problem is back again.

He has reinstalled the Network card driver, reset Sock settings etc. reinstalled the games but nothing helps. The one thing I have asked him to check, is if he has unwittingly installed a program which is hogging the internet, what’s the best way of checking for this ? Advised he use ESET online scanner or spybot.

    Any advice please ?

To add, if its just the game, bad routing or peering (you cant control, can only pester virgin), what modem (puma 6 chipsets are bad), what router (qos settings can remove bufferbloat, bufferbloat appears as lag).

sounds like its the one game, and all he can do is complain to virgin.

simple plain old task manager can show if something is hogging the net

Is it the interent or the pc giving the problem is it a high spec PC ? Yes it is very high spec, built around 4-6 months ago, believe it to be an internet problem.
    Thank you

    Hello
my Son does use an Ethernet cable, have just replaced with a new Cat 6 cable, only 30cm long, but issue remains, I wonder if it is the virgin router Superhub V3.0, because as it’s intermittent they won’t always catch it in a test. I have DLInK DIR 655 I used to use, if I put the router in modem mode and use the DLInK, and if it’s ok, I assume it will prove it’s the superhub at fault, , but if it doesn’t work, it could be the virgin Modem ??? Any thoughts please, P.S. all the spyware antivirus tests showed no infections at all.

Regardless of what others imply about router/modem chipsets, games are always going to have lag due to the nature of how the servers are done through users systems that get overwhelmed. You have to remember that game servers tend to get issues during peak times and due in part with the speed of your connection. There is nothing that your provider can do if it does not involve their network infrastructure of your connection between you and the headend.

    Hello
i do accept that, but he wasn’t having any issues with any of his games, until recently now it’s quite common with different games, very significant, so although it could be as you say, with such a massive change, I think still need to investigate other reason, thanks

Nothing to really investigate. Game servers are notorious to have lag.

Have to disagree, ALL his games were fine until very recently, then suddenly several of them had this issue, different game servers, too much of a coincidence, will continue investigating thanks

The problem is in the areas where you have very little control.

    1. The internet routing.
    2. Game servers and their locations.

Some online games may have different servers, either a manual choice or Auto. The auto usually simply choosing the lowest ping.
That may not be the best choice as it might just be the one which has occasional long pings.
The only way to find out is by experimentation. A consistent ping of 50 ms may be better than 40 ms with the occasional 800 ms ping, or whatever is the case.

It may vary depending on the capacity of a particular game server and the number of players/popularity at a given time which will vary with time of day and the routing on the particular day.

I had a complete internet outage a day or two ago in UK. Whilst they are fixing things obviously there would be a tendency to longer ping times by routing around problem areas etc.
