New NIC works at 100Mbps - drops internet connection at 1000gbps

    Hi,

We recently upgraded our broadband to full fibre to the property BB. 250Mbps.

Three PCs hardwired to the router, two by ethernet powerlines (TP-link AV2000 2-Port Gigabit Passthrough Powerline), the other 600Mpbs.

The former connects to my 2 year old PC, which already has a 1000gbps NIC. Now get mid 100s regularly. Happy with that

The latter to a 10 year old PC, which had an onboard 100Mbps NIC.

So I got a new NIC for it, the Intel L210 Gigabit Connection card.

At 100MBps, it is fine, and faster than the old on board card. Get around 80 to 90 (after 30, that's good).
However when I flip it to Gigabit, I lose my internet connection.

Baffled. Can't find anything on the net. Am assuming something on board is the problem (and indeed, have contacted the engineer at the company that sold me both these [Shuttle] PCs, to see if he can advise).

So - anyone here have ANY idea why this happens?

    W10 x64 (21H2 Build 10944.1415)

    Thanks in advance

It could be many things network cable if its not cat 6 the PC may not have the power to get top speed, network setting if its set to full duplex that would kill it

Your cable is probably not meeting Cat6 requirements: 23 gauge solid tinned copper or Insulated bare copper, forget copper clad and multi strand. the weight of a 305M roll must be between 20-22 KG anything under that is not adequate and should not even exist.

Cat7 cables bought for all connections when we upgraded, so I don't think it's that.

    Thanks

Ok, that would be more than... Maybe you have a compatibility problem between the card and the MB interface... You could try another brand like Realtek and test, this works good on older machines.

Yes, but the problem is not speed - it's that the card does not connect to the internet when set to gigabit. Auto-negotiate goes to 100mbps. So that rules out the powerline.

Ok your power lines adapters are not Gigabyte that's all, The network will run a the speed of it's slowest link in the chain.

You sure about that? 600mbps is the spec? And it doesn't connect at all.

What model are these, because a standard ethernet adapter will negotiate at 10 or 100 or 1000 nothing else.
