    NAS HDD issue

Hi all be gentle this is my first post and I am moderately tech savvy at best.
In short I purchased a NAS and during installation the HDD's (Seagate Ironwolf (cheap I know)) would not format.
I have done as much as I can research but I now find myself going round in circles. While this has been a good education piece I believe this issue needs an expert.
In short I have tried the following.
    1. I've tried to Initialize the disk using Windows [10] Disk Management
1a. All I can do is change the disk designation to (D).
1b. It also states that the disc has "No Media"
    2. I then tried to Initialize the disc via Diskpart.exe.
2a. The "List disk" is as follows
    DISKPART> list disk

Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
    -------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
    Disk 0 Online 238 GB 0 B *
    * Disk 1 No Media 0 B 0 B
2b. After selecting disk 1 I did the following
2c. attributes disk clear readonly (successful)
    2d. convert mbr (successful)
2e. When I attempted to bring the disc online I received the following.
    Virtual Disk Service error:
    The object is not found.

This is happening on 2 new HDD's and I'm hopping that it wasn't the NAS unit that ruined these disks. (Could I please ask for help with this issue and not advice on what I should have brought (sorry but I have been reading allot of forums over the past 2 days)).

It would help if you included the make and model of the NAS, and how you are connecting to it. Are there no guides (online maybe) from the NAS manufacturer on how to set it up?

    Hi there
as the previous poster says - those NAS systems aren't normally just "plug and play"
Depending on the NAS system you might have to enable SMB1 on your Windows system, start a SAMBA service on the NAS, set up the HDD's for sharing etc.

This stuff is easy enough to do but without knowing the NAS system you have it's really impossible to go further on this. The chances are the NAS system will either be QNAP or LINUX based but without knowing ????.

    Cheers

    Fair point thanks

The NAS is the Synology DS220j and I followed this YouTuber Unboxing and setup of the Synology DISKSTATION DS220j #synology #NAS #DS220j - YouTube as the NAS did not come with instructions past basic connections.
In short I built the NAS as per the instructions (install the HDD) then as per the instructions I found the NAS via chrome by entering find.synology.com (Synology web assist page) I connect to the NAS without issue.
The issue begins after I click setup and go to install the DiskStation Manager (DSM) where I get to 8% the there is a fail to format disk error (35).

This leads me to think that the issue is with the drives. I hope this was enough information?

    Thank you for replying.

Synology NAS boxes use a Linux file system(ext4), so you do not use Windows for formatting the HDDs you would have formatted during the setup procedures.

    > Storage Manager.

That should tell you the situation, the setup procedures will have done the formatting and configuration to whatever you selected. e.g. Mirrored, just one big drive etc.

Mine is an old model, 2 drives mirrored, something like this.

The list of Synology compatible drives is here.
