    Wireless USB connection

This is an unusual strange request !
I have a SONY BRAVIA KDL 40W4000 TV set, that works just fine.I want to watch BBC Iplayer on it.But the BBC no longer support this model [ !!! ]https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/articles/00178923[I didn't know they could DO that !]

However, I have a Win 10 laptop on which I CAN watch iPlayer. So I want to use the TV as a "second screen" for my laptop, connecting it with a USB cable. But I don't want a long trailing lead across the room.So what I want / need . . .is a small wi-fi thingy in two parts, one - a "transmitter" - to plug into my laptop's USB socket, and the other - a "receiver" - to plug into the TV's USB socket.
Is this possible ?And I haven't a clue what to ask for !

    Hello, Robin Clay.

Many televisions now have bluetooth screen projection, but since yours is a slightly older model, this can't be solved.

Using a USB cable to connect to your TV will not work. You must use an HDMI, VGI /RGB or DisplayPort (only on certain TVs) to connect your laptop.

Sadly without skill in engineering a transmitter is impossible

So, unfortunately you will need a cable across your room. Sorry

Addressing just that, Yes, it happens. Some people call it planned obsolence but in reality when a product is no longer produced there is no money coming in to pay for the technical side of support [programmers] without taking money from other projects/products, just simple economics [can't rob Peter to pay Paul]. I have 2 NAS drives that need replacing this quarter as the firmware/software for them no longer supports the latest security fixes, can't go from version 3 to version 5 but then they are 6 years old.

    See
Help choosing a device to connect to your existing TV | iPlayer help

One way to "update" the built-in Smart TV is to connect a Chromecast 4 via HDMI. It allows you to use the Google TV streaming system. It has its own processor, memory and storage, and can be used in any TV. I use one in a similar TV model, it works well, no problems. I have not used iPlayer.

Also, it may be possible to "project" the laptop screen on the TV screen, via Wi-Fi.

The handbook mentions "Blu-Ray" but not BlueTooth :-(.
Thank you. I did have a slight suspicion that my idea wouldn't work.
    HDMI cable it is, then.

    Well, quite.
I have two scanners (A4 and A3) that work just FINE - but not under Win 10 ! So when my old XP (that drove them) died, I just bought an old XP laptop of ebay, rather than lashing out on new scanners. I have several "computer cameras" that don't work on Win 10.
But with all three - iplayer, scanners, cameras - the broadcast / equipment generates an output / signal that comes down the wire, and I still don't know why new equipment can't handle it.
This iplayer nonsense is a classic - I CAN play iplayer on my TV - but only by using my laptop as an intermediary. The signal sent down the telephone line is a sequence of 0s & 1s, ONs and OFFs. So how CAN the BBC just decide ?? How does the signal KNOW ???
Thanks. anyway, for your comment ;-)

    Thank you.
However, it does contain this line :-
    Before you make a purchase...

. . . which is where I lost interest. It sounded expensive ;-)

Thank you. An interesting concept - but again, Sixty quid.

That's what I was hoping for, by buying a "connector" for (I hoped) less than about £20 !

    Thank you for your response.

Buy chromecast dongle. About £20 on ebay,

Alternatively an Amazon firestick is really good for this.

It is 13 years old TV from around 2008, so has not been supported for a very long time.

I have 2 Sony "Smart" TVs from around 2011/2012.

You are wasting your time expecting Miracast support, which is what you are asking about, that came out around 2012.

So you would be looking to Roku, Amazon fire, Chromecast etc dongles.

"The signal sent down the telephone line is a sequence of 0s & 1s, ONs and OFFs."

It is far from as simple as that. It takes a lot of time, money and expertise to develop software like drivers for devices and features.

Wireless HDMI connections are also an option.
