Connecting windows 10 on laptop to a wired ethernet connection

I have an older HP Pavilion laptop with and i7 Intel processor, I was going to try to run the updates so I could get it up to date and it seemed like the wireless connection even though it's a good wireless connection was taking forever to download the updates. So I plugged an ethernet cable into the laptop and into an ethernet port in my house that I know is working.

Apparently the laptop has to be configured so that it uses the wired connection when there's a wire connected to it and when there is no wire it uses the Wi-Fi. I there any tutorials on here that show exactly how to set up a laptop so that it will accept a hardwire ethernet cable when plugged in and when not use the Wi-Fi?

I appreciate all replies in advance if I don't reply right away it's because I'm out blowing snow

Go to the network control panel. You should see a wifi network device and a wired/ethernet network device.

Right-click on the one you want to disable (wifi) and select disable from the context menu.
Right-click on the one you want to enable (ethernet) and select enable from the context menu.

Now wifi is off and ethernet is on.

I would have done that if I had both in my network but I don't I only have what you see in the screenshot.

That is my problem I don't have a ethernet icon. This is all I have, The laptop needs to be setup for a ethernet connection. That is what I need help doing. So I ahve to use the WIFI and this laptop can only connect to a 22.4 Ghz connection

The second screenshot is of my winver on the HP laptop, shouldn't windows update to the latest version? that version on the desktop isn't up to date.

There are still files downloading and then they have to be installed so maybe the latest version isn't installed yet? it is taking ever over my 2.4 WIFI

Yes I know that version of Windows is very old. It's an old laptop that I haven't used for years so I wasn't in any security risks. After I posted it took several hours for all the updates to download and install and now I've got updated version on the laptop.

In the device manager under networks they were No yellow triangles with exclamation points, that's what's so weird about not having an ethernet connection under my networks. From what I've researched so far there are some articles and videos about getting a laptop set up for ethernet. I'll have to look into them a little bit more but thanks for your reply

Look in device manager. Do you see the ethernet interface under Network Adapters ?
Here's mine. The first entry in the wifi. The second one is ethernet.
(BTW ... the version of Windows does not matter.)

what are the pros and cons, HP has all their Proprietary software and programs, I don't want to cause a mess by doing something wrong when I don't use the laptop often at all.

Not to mention having to reinstall alll the programs I use on a laptop that I might use once every 2 years, that is why it is so old and the windows version was so out of date. Now this is the version of windows installed.

Thing is, the OS is so old, you may not be able to update it.

Do you need the programs on it, as you say you barely use it.

But when you do you want it to work.

Have you installed the Ethernet drivers ?

Sometimes you have to install them for the ethernet port to even show up.

You should be able to get them at the HP website.

I don`t blame you for not wanting to reinstall windows, especially on a laptop, they can be a real PITA.

The only reason I even tried to use the ethernet port was so the update would download faster but now that it is at least last years version I think I will leave it be. I was even thinking baout buying a new laptop so I'd hate to go throughreinstalling Win 10 and the headaches if something goes wrong with HP's stuff etc. So for now I thank everyone who replied but I think I will make this resloved and the fix for me is to buy a new laptop when I need one.
