    Limited network speed

    Hello all,

    I have a 1 Gbps fiber connection to the internet. However if I perform a download speedtest, the max I can reach is 450 Mbps.
    I was blaming my ISP first, but it seems somehow my laptop is limiting the speed.

    This is what I tested:
    - Transfer speed between 2 laptops on the same network = 800 Mbps (tested using iPerf3)
    - Download speed op other laptop = 800 Mbps
    - Download speed on my laptop = 450 Mbps
    - Download speed on my laptop in safe mode = 900 Mbps !!!

    So something is limiting the external speed on my laptop when booted in normal mode.
    I tried disabling all firewalls and anti-virus stuff (Avast , Acronis)... No change.

    Any idea how I can find out what is limiting my network speed?

    I see a download speed difference on my 25Mbps service between the 802.11ac Wireless adapter and the Gigabit Wired adapter of my Notebook, the Wired is always faster in the Kbps or Mbps data speed. Same for the Gigabit Wired and 802.11n adapters. Also involved with Wireless is whether using 2.4g or 5g connection.

    All my tests and speeds only concern wired connections directly on a router port using Cat6 cables.

    Hi,

    The first thing to try would be to disable. In advanced adapter properties.

    Green Ethernet
    Energy Efficient
    Power saving

    See how it does.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

    I could set "Energy-Efficient ethernet" to disabled.
    And also disabled power saving.

    No Green Ethernet setting.

    But the result was still the same unfortunately.

    Ok, most of the time it does the trick...

    Try to see the configuration you have in safe mode with TCP Optimizer and check in Standard mode if there is a difference.

    Or Try Optimal setting and if setting look to have been already modified, you can also revert to Windows default.

    Compared settings in normal and safe mode boot... they are identical.

    I don't think is issue is caused by adapter settings anyway, as I get 800 Mbps speeds on internal traffic between nodes on my network.

    Only traffic going outside is limited.

    OK, it's clear Avast is causing this.

    Contacted there support desk.

    Hey man, since you're using a laptop it uses a wireless connection. 802.11 has very specific standards they all have limits. It all depends on your systems physical specs not the software. Bluetooth + all other wireless technologies have data transfer limits. All of this also depends on if you're on a 2.4/5ghz connection.

    802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax/be Standards:

    802.11a = 54 Mbps (LIMIT)
    802.11b = 11 Mbps (LIMIT)
    802.11g = 54 Mbps (LIMIT)
    802.11n = 600 Mbps (LIMIT)
    802.11ac = 1.3 Gbps (LIMIT)
    802.11ax = 10 Gbps (LIMIT)
    802.11be = 48 Gbps (LIMIT)

    @stevend -

    What is your ISP providing you on the upstream?
    Are you *sure* that Avast is the culprit?

    BTW - get rid of Acronis!

    Use Macrium Reflect 8 {Free/Home] instead.

    Macrium Software | Reflect Free Edition

    FWIW.
