Unable to connect with Remote Desktop when on another network

I can connect, using Remote Desktop Connection, to my main desktop PC with my laptop when both are on the same network, but if I try to connect when I'm away from home, I can't.

The desktop is running Win10 Pro Version: 21H1 (Build 19043.1348). The laptop is running Win11 Home (Insider/Dev: Build 22494.1000).

    Any help appreciated in advance.

    Ken

You cannot connect directly over internet as you have a firewall between you and local area network at home. It is possible to do it but not that secure. Much easier to use an application like Teamviewer.

    Thanks. I can do TeamViewer.

I'd still like to know how to do this in case the person I'm helping doesn't have TeamViewer. (Isn't RDC presented as a way of one person being able to help another person? They aren't gonna be on the same network in most cases.)

In order to remotley connect you need to forward ports on the router to the pc your connecting to and you also need to know the internet IP of the connections

How do you do that? Could you please give me a step by step procedure or a link to a site that has that methodology?

    Hi Ken

I've successfully used Microsoft Quick Assist to remotely connect with PCs.

Provided the internet connection is adequate on both ends, the functionality was acceptable for remote troubleshooting, updating & tweaks.

One great feature of Quick Assist is that it is resident in any recent Windows OS, no need to verify or download, just direct the user to the app and go.

Thanks for your help. Looks like TeamViewer is a LOT simpler.
