    Cannot access network shared printer

I have three computers, a home built desktop, a lenovo L590 Thinkpad and a Dell Inspiron 5759. They are networked and incredibly, at the moment sharing files successfully. Both laptops are running Windows 10 21H1 19043.1288. The desktop has a Brother MFC-J6910D printer connected to it via a usb cable. Up until a couple of months ago (more or less, can't be sure) both laptops could access the printer without difficulty.
Then I found that I had no access to the printer from, well I can't remember which laptop, but I think it was the Dell. I got an error 0x00000032. After uselessly searching the internet I came to my senses and checked out TenForums and found a post referring to Windows update KB5005565. This post explained that it was the update that caused the problem and uninstalling the update will fix it. I did that and it did!
However I'm not sure what build the Lenovo was on at that stage, and now neither the Lenovo or the Dell will connect to the printer. The Lenovo produces the 0x00000032 error when I try to print something, but there is no sign of KB5005565 in the update list. The Dell has a brand new Windows install forced on me by MS due to a driver issue, but that's another (long) story. I can't even install the printer on the Dell and I can't find KB5005565 on this laptop either. I read KB5005652 but couldn't even find a key named ....\printers\pointandprint in any of my computers. Furthermore before reading KB5005652 I had never even heard of "pointandprint".
Can someone please help me enable printing from my Laptops.

Hello Alli and welcome to TF ,

See this thread if you haven't see it yet: Possible printer issue with KB5005565

You may want to read from the end going backwards towards the beginning of the thread. They mention some workarounds to make printing work.

Thank you Steve108. I have gone through the thread you mentioned. I tried the registry hack that Nikki605 suggested, thank you Nikki605 but it had no effect. I tried deleting update KB50006670 as you did and this may have allowed the printer to appear on the list of printers in settings-devices-printers and scanners. But I still can't print. I still don't understand what point and print is. When I install a printer I just follow through the process in settings-devices-printers and scanners. This has never found my printer but as soon as I start entering its name manually, it recognises it straight away. Then I just keep going and the printer is installed and connected. Of course if there is a problem the useless troubleshooter as always doesn't achieve a thing. Another issue is, as far as I can see the change that FMS made simply made it necessary for administrators to install printers, not mere users. Well I am the owner and administrator of my machines so why can't I install printers in my own xxxxxx computers? Please Xi Jinping, build an OS that will wipe FMS off the face of the earth. IMPORTANT NOTE: Observant readers may detect a note of frustration in this post. This is aimed at FMS, not readers or posters of TenForums. Thanks TenForums, a great site.

    Hello Alli,
I can only imagine the frustration this must be causing.

This may help understand point and print: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...oint-and-print

Finally, something intelligible Waking from Microsoft's PrintNightmare

    "Point and Print explained

Point and Print is Microsoft’s terminology for connecting a Windows client PC to a printer centrally managed on a Windows print server without requiring installation media at the client. When adding a printer hosted on a Windows print server (Start — Printers and Scanners — Add Printer) or (Start — Search <enter \\<print server name or IP > — double click printer name) a connection to the central print queue is made. The driver files and configuration of that central print queue are pulled from the print server and installed onto the client PC. A print job created on the client PC is generated using local print driver files and then relayed back to the print server’s central print queue for processing to the printer for output onto paper."

Don't know why this was so hard for me to find. Hope it somewhat clarifies the muddy waters

I think Point-and-print is the only way to share a USB connected printer with other PCs on the network and it must be what you're using to access your USB-connecting printer when printing from a PC not attached to the USB printer.

I'm not using Point-and-print thankfully, so I don't have any first hand experience to share here.

Thanks again Steve108. It appears that I am indeed using point and print to set up my printer. That leaves me with two questions. 1, Would I not be 1 of millions who use the same method of installing their printer or printers? And 2, Pardon my ignorance, but how else to you do it?

Yes, others are suffering from the same issue and some have worked around it for now using methods discussed in the other thread.

If you have a USB printer, I'm not knowledgeable on how else to share it. Please feel free to ask in the other thread where more people are following the situation.

I'm fairly/99.9% certain printing using a USB server wouldn't be affected by current KB fiasco as each PC would be printing directly to the printer using its own locally installed driver - if I understand things correctly.

Isn't MS just wonderful? I removed the usb cable between the printer and the desktop. I connected the printer to the modem/router using a network cable. On each of my three computers I downloaded the latest installation software for my printer (actually since MS provides such fantastic facilities for networking, I only had to down load it to one machine and copy it to the other two). I ran the software on each machine, it ran flawlessly and now I can print from all three computers. Printnightmare? What printnightmare? Thanks Steve108 you taught an old dog a new trick, ie don't get stuck in a mindset. Thanks TenForums you did it again.
