Can Windows switch an established route from one adapter to another?

I have set up the interface metrics on my Ethernet and WiFi adapters so that Ethernet is preferred over WiFi. When I plug in the Ethernet cable, I see in the System Tray that the connection switches to the wired adapter. However, the WiFi connection is still active, and any ongoing "sessions" continue to use WiFi. For example, I may have started a Teams or Zoom session, discover that the WiFi is not keeping up and therefore I plug in the cable – but it does not help, because Teams/Zoom continues to use the WiFi adapter. The same thing happens if a backup job from my client to the NAS is running – it sticks with the adapter it was on, unless I disconnect the WiFi connection completely to force a switch.

Is there a way to change this behaviour?

    Hi,

Windows will always use the initial adapter until it drops, this behaviour is by design since windows 98.

Instead of disconnecting from your Wifi access point. Use your laptop function key to Shut down your Wifi card
It takes seconds to toggle back and forth.
