Hi, appreciate the response. Let me ask you this.. My isp which is spectrum sent me a wireless router and will send a modem, both for free. Even though theyre both free do you suggest I keep them? Or buy my own router and modem? Of keep the spectrum wireless router and buy my own modem?

If you have full fibre then you'll need a decent router to connect to the ISP's WAN -- most domestic quality routers aren't very good - especially if you are talking about the 1 Gbps and over Broadband rates.

In this case get yourself a decent router that's compatible with the ISP's WAN (fibre cable). For those still not on full cable then any bog standard router will do. I'd advise also on any router have some LAN connections and use a cheap switch for several devices. You can also connect a switch to something decent like a NightHawk wifi extender which theoretically can yield speeds of up to around 1 Gbps or slightly over.

In general it's usually better to get and install your own gear rather than use bog standard mass produced cheap stuff provided by ISP'S even if it takes a bit more research to get correct gear.

I also don't like combos because if one piece fails you have to replace the whole thing, but for individual components then just the broken piece needs to be replaced.

Why not try out what they send you. If you like it, then just keep it. If you want to upgrade, then get your own and send theirs back.
