    in a word - infrastructure

If you have copper wires all the way back to the exchange then 20Mbps is actually quite good. If you have optical fibre all the way to the house then hundreds of Mbps is typical. Mine is fibre to the cabinet, with the last short hop over copper wire. I get about 50Mbs.
Same here Bree, Fibre to the cabinet which is just outside the village at the opposite end of the village from me. My desktop is Ethernet and the Laptop is wireless and I get just under 63Mbps download and about 18Mbps upload, the best ping is about 20ms. It can be lower at busy times but I've never seen it below 40Mbps which is a lot better than the under 4Mbps I used to get.
Of course we have no chance of getting providers like Virgin here the infrastructer is wholly owned by BT (Openreach) and as we are only a small coastal village the big boys aren't interested. A few years ago it was only the fact that the village a couple of miles from us had an MOD radar establishment we got broadband over the phone lines, because at the time you had to have so many sign up for it to have it installed.

Here in the UK we are slowly catching up, pardon the pun, but it also depends on which package is purchased and from whom. For broadband I am still paying almost the same as when it was 30!!
Easily the best by far is virgin Media. I have been with them since pre day 1 - when they took over a local provider. Others advertising 'superfast' are pathetic. They are supposed to advertise, by law, anything but, but they seem to get away with it. I was stopped once in the shopping precinct and asked what my 'provider' was. When I mention Virgin, they say no prob and do a runner. none of the commercial providers can keep up with VM but they still 'try it on'.

In the very near future I will be on 1GB+ but it takes time to move the upgrades but I am happy to wait.

XTL: judging by your large post above, you seem to be using steam as a benchmark, sorry if wrong. Try a speed tester???

    @xTL -

All of these "metrics" look impressive, but I can tell exactly how things are when I:

    1) Download/Upload multiple files across the world.
    2) My system is overly responsive.
    3) Internet based tasks are done in the blink of an eye.

    speedtest.net / fast.com / dslreports.com does not count as a speed test ?
i did include results from those sites.
i'm not sure what test you're referring to, could you be more specific?

And yes steam can be sorta used as a " benchmark " for speedtest, as can any server that you can test your bandwidth against.

How did you get this picture? Because this is from the desktop app which I run the same speed test but all I can figure out is how to post a link instead of this picture.

I am so envious --- I live in an apartment complex that provides Wi-Fi as part of the rent. That is the good news. The bad news is that it is supposedly capped at 5.0Mbps (although I often see 6-7Mbps with OOKLA). Yes, that is 5.0 compared to the hundreds and hundreds that others are reporting. I am now told that I can buy an additional package for another $20/month to get 'up to 20Mbps'. I have applied for it, but will see how that works out. Gads....

There is a "share" option at the top right of the speedtest desktop app. There, if you copy the link and paste it into your browser, you get the same result.Paste an image here on this page with the Paste Image icon while typing a response. Or u jist use printscreen & paint ( crop this pic )

I used the native snipping tool on Windows.
After snipping the image, click the copy icon, then type "Ctrl+V" to paste on the message you are typing.
