    in a word - infrastructure

If you have copper wires all the way back to the exchange then 20Mbps is actually quite good. If you have optical fibre all the way to the house then hundreds of Mbps is typical. Mine is fibre to the cabinet, with the last short hop over copper wire. I get about 50Mbs.

It's not only in different countries but also depends on internet provider as well as type of connection they offer. For instance, I'm limited to 20Mbps using 4G mobile network while just couple of clicks away there is fiber cable network available with 100Mbps and even 1Gbps.

Many are probably using their school, university & office connections to show off better scores. I know I did. at home I'm at 100 mbps, and it costs a lot money.
    Hi there
reason things are different is usually different / ageing infrastructure, currency fluctuations, local taxation policies, workforce available to build and maintain the networks and of course the volume of subscribers that can pay for the relevant services.

For example in Africa the mobile phone system is often better than in a lot of Europe --since they never had anything beyond basic limited old "copper wire" phone system --therefore they could start it from scratch.

Also local taxes, "Corporate Greed" and Govt policies in different jusrisdictions also play a part.

Another example - train fares in UK are often horrendous -- flying from Glasgow to London - around 650 KM is far cheaper by plane than train - govt policy has smaller subsidy for UK rail network / infrastructure and passengers -- than in Germany etc where govt subsidy is higher fares are lower -- it's up to the electorate of these countries to decide -- until standard unified world currency, world govt etc (never going to happen and we probably wouldn't want it in any case) prices and available services will be different in different countries !!

    Cheers
