    Network randomly stops working

Hi so I think I may have malware, I've done scans with a bunch of tools and not much has popped up however the issue I'm having is becoming super frustrating. I'm on an ethernet connection.

Whenever I boot my machine, it can take up to 20 mins to connect to the internet. It says it's connected but pages load really slowly and it's barely useable. Then after it starts working, about an hour two later it will stop working properly again, but the strange thing is that if I'm playing a game or connected to something, then that specific thing won't be effected at all, but any new connections I try to make will. Also when this issue starts to happen, some software doesn't open, it's as if it's 'paused', and when the issue stops, it will open up and resume as normal.

Does this sound like malware? What can I do to try to fix it without reinstalling windows?

Welcome to the forum. Are you connected via cable or wifi? Are other devices effected.
What version of windows are you using from a cmd prompt type winger post results.
    Open a cmd prompt type
    Ipconfig /all

    tracert Adobe. Com
    Tracert 194.119.131.66

Post results when working and faulty

Try to remove the power from your router. Completely unplug it from its power supply, and restart your router.

Hi, thanks for you replies, info below:

Ethernet connection, I've restarted the router about 10 times total over the last week.
I don't think other devices are effected, however I was testing it yesterday and during the issue my phone and another phone were both having a similar issue, but that was the one and only time, whereas my PC has had this about 5x at least every day for over a week.

The problem with doing tracert or ping when it is not working, is that it just stalls and sits there, then when the issue is fine again, it will all start to run again. I've also had ping google with the -f flag just always running in the background, and when my internet stops working correctly, I will continue to get a ping reply, but any NEW pings will stall until the issue is fixed, and which stage it will resume. It's very strange and I've never seen anything like it before.

You didn't post Ipconfig when not working as that would show if you loose ip. The strange thing is you don't loose connection as tracert still connects. Running a ping is a big no no as its in effect a doe attack and some routers may drop to protect from attack.

What happens when it drops error messages browser error does everything stop or just certain things. Are you running VPN or av are you sure no proxy is set in browser

I'll try to get an ipconfig when it happens next, but I'm gonna hazard a guess and say I'm not losing IP as it would drop current connections if that was occurring I think

No error messages in browser I've also tried 4 different browsers, some games I get a timeout in but ONLY if I'm not connected BEFORE the issue happens.

It is happening to everything that requires an internet connection. So Discord will drop, my Outlook will drop, I have a feature in my music player that calls to the last.fm API to do some stuff and if I run that while the issue happens my music player crashes. The two games I play at the moment are OSRS and League of Legends. If I'm logged into OSRS then it's as if nothing is wrong with my network, no packet loss, no higher ping, nothing. The same goes for League, however after a game, it tries to load the client and it crashes the client at that stage. I've tried using the Tron Script from Reddit which didn't find anything or fix much, I've run Avast, Malwarebytes etc etc and it got rid of some infections but there's nothing current on the system, one of the files was this however - VirusTotal

    But it's since been deleted.

Reinstalling my OS is a huge pain since I have a lot of customizations to my system that I'd have to manually do again, I was thinking of maybe doing another install on a dual boot and see if I can make the issue happen again, though I don't know if this would be an effective way of troubleshooting or to see if I should reinstall my OS altogether.

What a mess it will take time to go through it all but logs show lots of malware, unsigned files, 92000 host entries, av corrupted. As a start remove avast then get their tool from their website to remove what it leaves behind its known to give these problems. Put a clean host file 92000 entries it has to scan everytime you visit a site

At a glance of the files I will say that there's a filed called General Hotkeys.exe that is just a recompiled autohotkey script that I run, as well as a few other autohotkey scripts as the .ahk file that I run.

The hosts file is large because I use a hosts file updater that blocks a lot of ads within software I use (GitHub - ohadschn/Unified-Hosts-AutoUpdate: Quickly and easily install, uninstall, and set up automatic updates for any of Steven Black's unified hosts files.), I will set it back to the default for now though and remove avast etc.
