Slow Speed According to the Test

My internet provider is Xfinity. I'm on a 400mbps plan. My old modem was a SB6141 which is not rated to be able to handle this speed, so I got a new one - the SB6190. I'm using a desktop...the cable from the wall goes into the modem and then feeds a Belkin router, and from that I have a wired connection to the computer but I can connect to the router with a tv and phone wifi. The computer does not have wifi, so it gets a wire. The modem is right next to it.

I tested my speed prior to changing and it was showing around 55mbps. Now with the new modem it shows about 90-95mbps. But why is this so much lower than my plan speed? Is there anything i can do to improve it? I tested the speed with no other devices on. Youtube videos still tend to buffer at times. Should I be seeing a higher speed? Or is there a different more accurate test? (OS version 20H2)

You don't say where you're testing. Try this site, it seems accurate for me...

I pay for 100/100 Verizon connection. This is usually the results I get.

Make sure the cable from the router to the computer is at least Cat 5 rated.

    Hi Brucex64,

There are a myriad of items to verify that could impact a Broadband connection's throughput. Here's a good place to start.

And do verify the specification of your Ethernet cables, as previously mentioned.

Please use an elevated Command Prompt with
    Code:
    ipconfig /all

Please redact any personal info like Public IP & mac details and post results.

I use this utility to confirm that the selected DNS is performing well and the best or fastest available for the area.
Please post a screenshot showing the results.

GRC's | DNS Nameserver Performance Benchmark

Also, visit speedguide.net, run the tcp/ip analyzer and post results.

    Connection Diagnostics

    Another test I like to run is to proof connection stability. From a Command Prompt, type the following;

    Code:
    ping google.com -6 -t
    Code:
    ping google.com -4 -t

Let this run for at least 1 minute or 2 minutes if you observe any significant inconsistencies in latency time.

When you're finished capturing data, use Ctrl C to end the test. Please only post these results if you see large variations in latency time.

I included a separate test for both IPv4 & IPv6 because one or the other could be impaired and the impairment might appear as inconsistent throughput.

Ok, here's some data. Attached is the ipconfig info and speedguide results. Also DNS benchmark.

The ping only worked with 4. All of the ping times were between 43ms and 53ms.

The cable from the router to computer is a cat 5.

Your current DNS IP doesn't appear anywhere on the DNS Benchmark App, that's problem #1.

Can you configure your DNS IP settings to use the following IPs?

208.67.222.123 (from line 3 of the Benchmark) at the preferred DNS
1.1.1.1 (from line 2 of the Benchmark) at the Alternate DNS

Change IPv4 and IPv6 DNS Server Address in Windows

Use option 2, at step #6, click on 'Use the following DNS server addresses and then enter the IP info from the Benchmark test results, as noted above.

Also, please visit this site and post a snip after redacting your IP. Test your IPv6.

Please update your 'My Computer' with your router make & model and post this info in the thread.
Also include the cable modem info.

    Your ipconfig /all results.

YouTube videos, lets say HD, only require about 5 Mbps. So 90 Mbps, no problem.

That suggests maybe something else is also downloading at the same time. However the 90-95 Mbps speed limit strongly suggests some 100 Mbps components in your system, maybe the Router is old.

Agreed on the YouTube speed requirements. My older Wireless connection was about 10-15 Mbps and videos rarely buffered.

I would still choose to solve the known problems first and that may very well identify the secondary issues.

We've established the throughput is considerably less than advertised, the selected DNS is not optimum and the IPv6 appears to be non-existent.

Also, the measured latency time during the ping test is definitely substandard for a cable modem, I'd expect no greater than 15-25 msec.

My current wireless connection has better performance at least for brief periods.

I set the DNS address as you suggested.

I think we may have the culprit here. I swapped the cable to the computer from the router to the modem, bypassing the router. NOW look at my speed...

Also, I did not have ipv6 when using the router..it was ipv4 only. Now, here is the test IPv6 result:

My router is Belkin N300. Is there anything I can do in the settings to get it faster, or is this router not capable? Or is a router supposed to slow it down that much? Its only a few years old.
