Also, I did not have ipv6 when using the router..it was ipv4 only. Now, here is the test IPv6 result:

My router is Belkin N300. Is there anything I can do in the settings to get it faster, or is this router not capable? Or is a router supposed to slow it down that much? Its only a few years old.

That's excellent news.

An interesting test would be to try both ping tests (-4 & -6) while directly connected to the modem, then we would have a baseline. Then compare results of the ping tests using the router.

Also, while directly connected to the modem, do you experience any YouTube buffering?


If you can demonstrate that the router is adding significantly to the latency performance or causing the YouTube buffering, your best bet is to go shopping for a newer router.

We may be able to squeak a bit more speed out of it but I'd be cautious updating the firmware to gain the IPv6 protocol and a bit more throughput. Older routers occasionally brick themselves during firmware updates.

The specs online are a bit deceptive, many just say 300 Mbps, however; the Belkin site says 150 Mbps max X2, if you use 2 bands. LOL

The OS specs don't even mention Windows 10.

I would recommend looking for a dual band 802.11AC or 802.11AX. There are plenty of dual band routers available using either of those protocols, anything less is just not worth your time. Keep in mind that some older WLAN cards may only function with 802.11b/g/n, however; you'd be upgrading security & performance characteristics for the future and the immediate gain would be an Ethernet connection capable of delivering your ISP's specified throughput.

Purchasing a router is the same as most any other technical device, buyer beware and read the reviews.

Anything that says "300mbps + 700mbps", I'd be suspicious. Plenty of them spec 1 Gbps or 950Mbps, as far as I know.

Another important feature to have is the ability to adjust wifi channels. I'm not certain if all the newer routers have this feature or not.

If this is the device, it looks great. This device does have adjustable wifi channels according to the manual but I'm not certain of how many it has to choose from. Otherwise, it looks good.

The router I posted above is $60, the R7450 is $76. Either device will perform well for home use. I'm not sure I could justify the additional $16, that's your call.
