Mobile Hotspot works perfectly - but how??!!

Yesterday roadworkers severed our broadband cable, breaking all comms capability (internet, tv, phone).
Connecting through Mobile Hotspot and thereby using the mobile phone service provider has worked like a dream (though currently an Office 2019 update is taking 55+ minutes to download 890+ MB and is still ongoing). One device is connected but "Allow more devices to connect" is checked and we will soon try to connect a second household device.
    Here is my question:
Q1 WiFi is unchecked on both phone and computer (it wouldn't work anyway after severance); there is no Bluetooth connection between phone and PC. Through what medium are phone and PC connected?
Note - The home router through which both phone and PC would normally access the internet is still switched on - is this the corridor of communication?
    Thank you!

Android phone WiFi hotspot function is different to their WiFi function.
    - WiFi hotspot = broadcast a network that, for example, your computer can connect to.
    - WiFi = send-receive WiFi signals so the phone can connect to a WiFi network set up elsewhere [such as your router].

So you are, judging by your comments, connected to the phone's WiFi hotspot.

You can get a much, much faster internet connection by connecting your phone to a USB connection on your computer.

My phone is my normal internet connection.
    - My computers connect to its WiFi hotspot.
    - But if I want to do a large download I connect it by USB instead.
    - I have an unlimited internet data allowance even when "tethered" to the computer [by WiFi hotspot or by USB].
