NAS shut down, causing problems with connected external hard drive

    Windows 10 Home 21H1

Should this happen or is this a glitch in Windows 10?

I have Windows 10 set up to Store files to a Synology NAS from a Windows PC within the local network, using Map Network Drive.

I turned the NAS off (due to having some electrical work done) and forgot to turn it back on when I turned my laptop on.

I connected an external hard drive to my laptop and when deleting a file it froze for a few seconds and then the file appeared in the bin, normally this happens instantly and it kept doing this when deleting or moving files between external hard drives I had connected.

I then remembered that I had not turned the NAS back on.
I turned it back on and everything went back to working as it normally does, with no freezes etc.

Should the turning off of the NAS cause this problem with connected external hard drives and if I need to report this issue (if it is one) how do I go about it?

Edit: One thing I forgot to mention, is that I did get a popup saying something along the lines of it can't connect to some of the network locations, which is fine, and I knew it couldn't because I had turned the NAS off.

Does that NAS make on-the-fly copies of created and/or deleted folders and files? If yes, my wild guess is that the computer doing the file deleting, not finding the NAS, finally tossed the file into the recycle bin. Temporary anomaly. All is well now! :)

Yes it does. The NAS has two drives, whatever happens on the main drive is replicated on the second.

Seems a bit weird that with the NAS turned off it can cause problems with copying and deleting of files when working with the external hard drives connected to the usb ports on my laptop.

I was not working with files on the NAS. This was impossible as it was off.

Does the NAS provide some backup for the material on the external HDDs? If yes, a slight pause probably normal? If not, I have no idea.

Could Storage Sense be involved? I have 2 x 2TB NAS drives attached to my Router, can Map the Public folder from any computer that is connected to the Network, Wired or Wireless.

Don't think I've heard about Storage Sense before.
I'll have a look into it.

This isn't a big deal as everything is working when the NAS is on, but it would be nice to know why this happened when the NAS was off, and should it be happening?

Edit: Yes, I remember what Storage Sense is now. I already have it turned off.

Other members must have setup their NAS to transfer/delete files within the local network?

If your NAS is switched off and you have two external hard drives connected to your PC, do you have problems deleting or moving files between the external hard drives?

I have a Qnap TS251D two bay NAS. I have one folder mapped on three different laptops. None of them exhibit the issue you are experiencing. I don't do any automatic synching though. I only use the NAS for manual backups using Macrium Reflect though.
