network printer wont install in win10

Unable to connect my older brother hl-5040 laser printer to new computer running win10-64b,v1909.

the printer connects to my old computer (win10-32b) via usb.

I set up sharing on it & the new computer sees it but keeps asking for drivers. It doesn't recognize the original ones I tried to install that came with the printer nor the 64b vista drivers I tried.

I also have a laptop (win10-64b) which sees the printer & prints fine. I wish I'd kept more detailed notes for it, all it sez is 'added printer to network'.

I would think win10 would have built in drivers for older printers anyway but it keeps insisting it needs a driver.

When you connect to a shared printer windows download the drivers from the pc doing the sharing the problem in this case is your sharing it on a 32 bit windows so windows cant get drivers for 64 bit from it. The windows your running is way out of date and out of support which wont help

Set the printer up on your Network either with an Ethernet cable to your Router, or via Wireless from the Menu on the Printer. Download the Windows 10 64 Bit drivers for this printer run the setup on the Remote computer and choose to install a Network printer, it will browse your network and should find the printer.

I was on that driver page. It sez the win10-64b drivers are builtin to win10.
my laptop has win10-64b with the printer working. is there a way to use it to get at the drivers?

yes that page is relevant but sez the same thing as the brother driver page--the drivers are builtin.
So I guess the problem is why the win10 install on this machine can't find them.

I got the new w10-64 computer printing on 2 of the 3 win os on my old computer
I booted the old one to win7-64 & tried reinstall nw printer on the new one & it worked.
I then booted old pute to win10-32 & new win10 pute printed.
I then booted old pute to WinXP & it sez cant find driver.
Theres sonething still not right cause when I turn on laptop with win10-64 with old pute in XP the laptop printed ok with nw printer.
anyone know how I could find out what the exact driver is that win10 is looking for or have a clue as to why the laptop has no problem printing but the new desktop does?

I've come to the conclusion that I need to be looking at network setting rather than printer drivers.
oldpute-xp connects to laptop-win10 but not to new pute-win10 would seem to indicate a setting off on the newpute-win10.
    any ideas?

    back to the beginning-
I found both putes are communicating-oldpute-xp talks to newpute-win10 & vv, its just a matter of if you reboot one to a diff system you have to reboot the other.
so back to why win10 cant find printer driver when oldpute is booted to xp.

for any other fellow old relics who might be interested, found the answer through the winxp forum.
basically you have to create a new, separate port in win10 to use the networked printer connected to an xp machine.
