Latest Intel 20.70.21.2 drivers drop in throughput speed

just a heads up, i just updated to 20.70.21.2 yesterday and noticed a massive drop in wireless performance.

same desk where i keep my laptop, i noticed internet was slow today, upon testing i noticed that speed dropped from 80-85 to a mere 40 mbit after 2 minutes the PC was on. touched a few settings, all the same, checked ethernet with the cable and still i could get the proper speed here so 95-100 mbit. tested on my smartphone and i get also 80-85 mbit.

downgraded to 20.70.19.1 and works normally. speed stable to 80-85 mbit.



so yes downgraded and informed intel about it with their feedback thingie.

keep an eye on that!

hmhm now it happened also with the old driver that speed drops to 40 mbit, i am confused. what is going on? is it windows10 then?

it seems i found the culprit: it's the bluetooth - when bluetooth is on, the wireless speed is affected by 50%. i tested with old drivers etc but it seems to be the same thing.

shall i rest and just disable bluetooth or there's a smarter way? change wireless channel? some setting on bluetooth? cheers

When Bluetooth was on, were you actually using BT to stream to a connected BT device?

not really, i tested that as well with my JBL speaker. even with just the JBL off and just by clicking the toggle bluetooth on you can immediately see a drop in speed.

right now i rolled back both wireless and bluetooth drivers - overall it's better than these latest intel..

bluetooth off : 90 mbit
bluetooth on : 70-80 mbit
with JBL streaming: 40 mbit again

but if i put back the new drivers, it's terrible, goes down to 20-35

Thanks, I may do some testing later today and see if I get similar results. I don't normally use BT on my PCs.

no problem, yeah, ok for now pulled out an audio cable and old drivers, problem temporarily solved (BT OFF) 😊

interesting if i switch to the 5G network (this router supports either or, not both together) then there is 0 interference with the bluetooth even with the JBL speaker streaming...

BUT

and big BUT hehe, the performance of the 5G is very poor, as soon as you move in the house a bit, and it's not that massive house, the range drops dramatically (not so affected with 2.4 GHZ) and it is also intermittently dropping, already tested settings and changed channel, etc, couldn't find anything consistent.

Now i don't know if this unavoidable, but i can imagine there are people using the 2.4 Ghz wireless AP as well as some bluetooth devices so what they are doomed to have a 50% speed drop? not great...

so for me now the choice is:

either use wired connection with cable IN the middle of the room and nice wireless bluetooth OR nice wireless connection and small audio cable to the bluetooth speaker... i am choosing the latter. speed is great and i can use the speaker too, although not wireless.

And in any capacity, the latest intel drivers were worse, so i am not reinstalling this release 20.70.21.2 wireless and bluetooth 22.30

my 2 cents

For 5G that is normal performance . 5G does not travel nearly as far as 2.4 . It does not go thru structured walls nearly as well either. So that is the tradeoff , if you are near enough the speeds are a lot higher but it does not have the coverage as a 2.4 signal .

{Note added after closer check on download page: if you've got a 8625 or 8260 Wi-Fi adapter, 20.70.21.2 is the latest driver version there. If that's your situation: (a) nevermind and (b) please update your Computer info to include those relevant details (simply providing make and model or motherboard make and model, will usually provide ample information about NICs available).

old drivers perform better here, so i am not updating for now - cheers
