using both ports on my Netgear C6230 (modem/router) with a switch

I bought a Netgear C6230 modem/router and a Netgear GS108Ev3 switch. The modem/router has two ports numbered 1 and 2. I was thinking I could use 1 for ports 2-4 on the switch and 5 for ports 6-8. The switch can do VLAN which I think means you can assign separate ports (1-8) to separate networks. I was going to use 1-4 for my main system and 5-8 for my NAS. It doesn't work when I set it up like this. Once the second network cable from the modem is plugged in to the switch, I can't find the switch.

Would I need a separate switch for port 2 from the modem?

You need to configure the switch for usage in a VLAN using the Netgear ProSafe Configuration Utility per section 3 of the user guide linked below:

That's what I did but it wasn't working. Not even the Netgear switch discovery tool would find the switch. I'll try again when I get home from work. I'm doing port based because I don't know what 802.1Q is.

Well Harry, you need to fully read section 3 of the guide in the link I provided. To set up the switch in the configuration you want requires that you use the Advanced Port Based Vlan Configuration screen. The screenshot you posted is what looks to be the basic configuration screen.
