Could you amplify the ---restarted--- please.
There are two procedures with different results.
    One is ---reboot---
    the other is ---reset---
    My modem doesn't use ---restart---
    Thanks.
The modem has been rebooted many times.

I have factory reset it too using a paperclip holding down the 'reset' button on the back (I am using a Virgin Media Superhub 3). All settings were back to their default after the reset and it took about 5 minutes to come back online.

Hard wired (ethernet cable/LAN) or wireless connection to device?

When does it happen - during usage? When starting up? Do you switch between ethernet cable <> wireless?

Post an image of the adapter settings window - right click network icon in Systray > Open network & internet settings > Advanced network settings , Change adapter options. Post the next page.

How do you set/change your DNS settings? What DNS setting(s) are you using?
Hard wired ethernet but I have options - see below.

The PC is on 24/7 so happens during usage although never when I've actively been sitting at it myself.

DNS - I have tried changing these in advanced adaptor properties on the PC.

I have tried my IPS's DNS and Google DNS.

The problem happened in the early hours of last night (interestingly, before it would come up with 'DHCP Enabled....No' after the problem occurred but now is still saying 'Yes':

Here is the Network window during the problem. As you can see, it seems to think everything is OK:

    Windows Losing DNS-settings.jpg

But trying to go to google.com (or it's direct IP of 216.58.212.238) doesn't work:

    Network settings:

    Windows Losing DNS-connections.jpg

As detailed above, I have the luxury of two ethernet cards and wireless. All have the same issue when DNS fails. If I disable one and enable the other if still doesn't work.

Here's what happens when I run the network troubleshooter during the problem:

During the occurrence of the problem this time, I switched off my two other routers acting as wireless repeaters to see if they were conflicting with the main router (unlikely). It made no difference.

Bugger. You seem to have all the bases covered, and still ... !!!

What's your antivirus/malware software (and does it have a built in firewall)?

EDIT : Haven't noticed it raised previously in this discussion, but can you set the DNS in your modem?

    Hello @otronics,

    Just a thought . . .

Check for ANY Problem Device Errors

[1] Click on this TenForums link => Batch Scripts / Programs.
[2] Click the direct download link Problem_Devices.bat in the MENU.
    [3] Run the .bat file.

    • If you want detailed information about the .bat file then scroll down the thread until you get to the relevant section.

    If there are NO ERRORS:

You will receive the message NO PROBLEM DEVICES WERE FOUND!, and NO log file is created on the Desktop.

    If there are ERRORS:

There will be a Prob_Devices.log file created on the Desktop.

    EITHER:

Copy & Paste the results into your post using the [CODE] tags . . .

[1] Open the Prob_Devices.log file in Notepad.
[2] Press the Ctrl + A keys together.
[3] Press the Ctrl + C keys together.
[4] In your post, click the Hashtag icon #.
[5] Click INSIDE the [CODE]Here[CODE] tags and press the Ctrl + V keys together.

    • In your post it will look like this . . .

    Code:

    <<< Results Here >>>

    OR:

UPLOAD the file => How to Upload and Post Screenshots and Files at Ten Forums.

    I hope this helps.

Kaspersky. I've disabled it with no change. It doesn't have a firewall.

    Thanks for the .bat file.

The result was: NO PROBLEM DEVICES WERE FOUND!

I am thinking this must be a router problem.

In your post you have the wrong DNS set it's set to a local DNS on a different subnet which won't be found set to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 post an ipconfig /all so we can see. The av your using can have known problems as a lot setup a proxy server to scan traffic. Disabling doesn't work uninstall and see if it solves it

This is the very reason that both Samuria and I were looking for this report. This quite clearly is a problem and now without creating unnecessary posts we can focus on correcting this deficiency. I'm not saying there isn't something else to be tweaked but this is where to start with any DNS related problem.

    Thanks for posting otronics.

I like to use a DNS Benchmark utility because I'm not certain which DNS servers work best in different parts of the world.

Perhaps Samuria knows the best servers for your location, I'd start there. If you'd like to compare what's available in your area, try something like this utility.

Interesting little program. During the testing process, mine seems a battle between OpenDNS and Cloudflare (keep swapping back and forwards as to which is the fastest). In the end, Cloudflare wins, which as luck would have it, is what I use.

If nothing else, I like it to confirm my current DNS choices are still within the top selections. If you check it periodically, you may identify trends, usually the top contenders are more consistent with any one of them being a good choice.

If I recall correctly, there's an explanation on the site why using an ISP's DNS server is a less than ideal choice. It is suggested that your ISP may redirect you to their preferred sites rather than say Google or Cloudflare's preferred sites.

The problem occurred for a second time yesterday.

I changed DNS servers to no effect:

    Windows Losing DNS-dns.jpg

Restarting the PC made everything work again.

My previous DNS settings were automatic and assigned by my ISP. They have been set that way for years and my laptops and other devices are using them with no issues...
