Need Serious Help: How to stop VLCPlayer from contacting the internet?

    Hi all,

This has been a problem I've been trying to solve for a long time but I haven't had much luck...

My goal is to prevent the VLC Player App from contacting the Internet. I know it's contacting the Internet because I just received a message that there's a new version of the VLC Player App that's available.

How can I stop the VLC Player App from contacting the Internet?

I'm running Windows 10 Pro and I'm using the in-built Windows 10 firewall and it's fully updated.

    Thank you

Block it in the firewall or find were it's connecting to and add to host file

Download One Click Firewall and right click the VLC icon on the desktop and select 'Block internet access'. Download link near bottom of page OneClickFirewall (winaero.com)

    Hello @NiceAndShy,

Open VLC > Tools > Interface > Under Privacy / Network Interaction > Uncheck Activate Updates Notifier.

    Works for me!

    I hope this helps.

Tools > Preferences (or Ctrl+P). Untick 'Activate updates notifier' and 'Allow metadata network access'.

I felt the same way. My solution is a bit out of the ordinary, but it works.

I just removed these items from the VLC installation folder. Version 3.0.10
There may be new things you will need to remove.

As you can see I saved them... just in case.
But w/o these files VLC Media Player doesn't try to call home.

VLC functions completely fine without these parts.

This is all that's left in my installation folder...

I'm pretty sure in the past couple of months there have been a few inquiries about VLC and it's network activity. Curious what it is about this particular app that's causes network consternation, whereas the 1000's of others out there don't. Many, many apps "call home" for updates, that's hardly unusual. What makes VLC Player stick out?

This OP is particularly concerned about their privacy and has asked similar questions about many other apps. I don't think there was anything that made VLC special, it just happened to be VLC's turn this time.
