Can a PC slow down internet speed? Do two connected PC's slow it down?

The internet speed to my PC runs a lot slower than Vodafone says it does, Today I had a speed of 21.4MB from Broadband.co.uk but Vodaphone says I get 40MB (but it should be 67MB). Connection is by cable via house power system. My son also has a PC connected - a more powerful one - and he does get 40MB. Can there be a problem within my PC that slows it down? or does having 2 PC's connected slow the speed to each of them? I did get much faster speeds when I was with Virgin so I do think that the fault is with Vodafone..
    Comments and advice please

I really can't help you much except to ask how are you connected? With a Ethernet cable or WiFi and what band of WiFi?

Also, is your son's connection the same as yours?

Internet bandwidth of servers is allocated on a piece of the pie concept and the server you are referencing may be allocating less than 40mb

Here is a speedtest I use and trust for accuracy but I don't know if it will work on your side of the pond

Are you connecting through your house wiring? If that's so your bottleneck may be there

    Wow, that was quick. Connection....

As I said the connection for both PC's is by ethernet cable connected to the home power line. Ookla gives me the same results as Broadband.co.uk.

It does not matter who has the "more powerful PC", or who is the ISP.

What matters is who is in control of the system as a whole.

Who is the person in charge of the Modem/Router ?

Most of these can be set to allocate bandwidth to users with certain requirements(QoS).

All things being equal (but is it ?) means half the bandwidth for 2 users.

Problem there is the computers have to connect through a Modem [MOdulation DEModulation] device which gets it power from the power line same as the computer, connecting a computer's Network adapter directly to the power line guarantees a burn-up. The Modem may have been furnished by the ISP or could have been purchased. Using 2 or more computers also require a Router between the computer and Modem, usually has an Uplink port for the Modem and 4 Ethernet ports for the computers. That's what is necessary to know about.

Also, it is possible to provide the Internet signal through power lines but don't know about the area.

Thanks for these responses. The connection through the power line is better than the previous wifi and my son is getting the faster speeds by the same connection except that his connection may not have to go though the main fuse box and mine does. There is a BT device at both ends of the connection specifically designed for this purpose.
Is there any way that some setting or hardware n the PC itself could slow the input?

The outlet adapter, I'm assuming it adapts your wall socket to Ethernet could be the problem. Are they the same? And will in the wall line distance affect speed? You might Google the Adapter's make and see if others have simular problems

An unlikely problem would be the computer's Ethernet interface. It's been decades since the original Ethernet at 10mb/sec speed was used but if one of your computers is an antique....

Are both computers Windows 10, earlier versions needed tweaking for maximum internet speed

Here is a good TCPIP tweaker

Download SpeedGuide.net TCP Optimizer - MajorGeeks

As I was reading your last post Frabnkhs your questions reminded me that the BT modem thing by the PC was not plugged directly into a wall socket but into a multi-socket extension lead which was itself plugged into another multi socket extension lead (8 other plugs in all) and this might just be the slowing factor. So, with considerable difficulty (because the wall socket is behind and under the desk) I've managed to get a multi socket into the wall socket so that the BT modem has its own line and the other 8 have a separate line. Result? The internet speed has instantly jumped from around 20MB to 40MB.
So thank you all who tried to help. I much appreciate it. I will also try the Speed Optimizer to see if I can improve it any more.
