Is fibre broadband a waste of £ for our situation?

I don't think I would need to pay for a new modem/router as my own ASUS router is VDSL capable but, if I ever think of changing over to fibre then I will check first.

You say fibre requires new cabling. Are you sure about that?

...your comment "A faster link doesn't always mean a faster download. Most of the time the source server limits the speed or sometimes is the multi network connections.". I agree and have had experience of this when downloading large Windows updates and Microsoft throttle things at their end.
I can't say I've ever seen MS throttle the downloads at their end. I get close to my broadband's maximum 50Mbps.

If today you have a copper wire cable, optic fiber requires new cabling (from ISP distribution box to the optic fiber modem - different from VDSL).

His VDSL modem would be right for the type of line he is looking at and 9 times out of 10 the ISP would also give a modem router for free.

You are right you know what you need for your internet use.
I had to take an adsl offer with the cheapest isp in my country but as it also offered fiber in my home I could only have fiber at 22 € (adsl 15 €). I thought adsl would be enough for me but since I play video games a bit and some games are large, I need the fiber speed to download (and re-download when clean install of windows) these games.

Thanks for all replies. I'll call this 'Solved' and stay with copper ADSL until we are all 'pushed' onto fibre in the next few years.
