Use modem/router combo as router only

I purchased an Arris SURFboard SBG6700-AC (modem/wifi combo) several years ago. I moved to another city with a different ISP. The cable guy could not get this to communicate with his cable system. There is an 80-year-old woman (neighbor) who has internet but no wifi. I bought her a tablet for Christmas that needs a wifi connection. How would I go about connecting this to her cable modem for the sole purpose of her to have wifi in her home? It seems to me this should be doable. Thank you for your help. .

You more than likely can't. The input side of the modem/router combination is going to be exclusively the modem.

Also trying to get your modem/router working on the cable system, did the technician press the reset button on your modem/router? I had an issue with my daughter's cable internet where the modem just would not connect. Finally after about 15 minutes, I just pressed the reset button on the modem/router to clear all the old settings out from the old ISP and it just magically connected to the new ISP!

I have extensively googled this subject. The only thing I can find is how to disable wifi but, not the other way around. I have a wireless router I do not use because the modem from my ISP has built-in wifi. I thought I would be better off trying to use this device if possible and keep my wifi router in my possession. I figured I would more likely need it in the future. I may just buy her a used one off eBay. They have several in the 30 dollar range. I have a lot more invested in the one I have. You can get a router to work with a cable modem, but getting 2 cable modem to work together is a non starter. Pickup a WiFi router to connect to the modem and you will have what you are looking for.

I see some good deals on older models of routers on Newegg. Some are brand new and some are refurbs...in the 30 dollar range, some less.
