Setting up my 1st NAS system.

This NAS will be a RAID 5, RAID 6 looks like over kill for what I need. The one question I have is the size needed for the individual HDD’s. My present packrat collection of internals totals 10 TB across 8 drives, and there are 4 more in storage from the Stone Age. it is all RAIDless. I am expanding my Computer collection. I have discovered cheap refurbished desktop micro PC’s which are ideal for computer control of my ham radio equipment. I am also going to setup an M1 MacMini as a media server. Almost all that is on the drives is music and videos. I want one set of drives for all of this.

Suggestions for what to get for a 5 bay external array would be appreciated.

What type of machine are you looking to host the NAS and what is the budget like?

    According to this:

    You need 5x 3TB drives.

    This is my NAS:
    NavyLCDR's NAS

It also runs a Plex Media Server and 1 Windows 10 VM.

I'm running the ZFS equivalent of RAID 0. I have 2 pairs of 3 TB drives. Each pair is a mirror pair, and the 2 pairs are striped. So I can lose 1 drive from each pair at the same time and still recover. The only thing I can't recover from is if both drives in a single pair fail at the same time. But you can also set up the ZFS file system with the equivalent of Raid 5.

OK I have a handle on it now. I was unclear as to the needed capacities for the individual drives in the RAID 5 setup, its total capacity. This is going to be basically a media server with Amateur radio control, and decoding software. Budget wise it is flexible with maybe $400 bucks the upper end.

And do you have a computer already you are going to use as a host?
