    Frustration With File Sharing

As far as I know, I have done everything called for in the tutorial "How to Share Files and Folders Over a Network in Windows 10". The one thing I cannot do is transfer a file from my computer to my wife's computer. I can open Network in File Manager, I can see the folder on her computer that I have set to share with everyone. Transferring a file to there is the one thing that so far I have failed to accomplish.

Apparently, "everyone" excludes me. This process was simple not too long ago, but at least for me, is anything other than simple. I don't even know where to begin to see what setting or settings I need to change, or perhaps I'm not even trying to transfer correctly.

Perhaps the worst part of this for me is doing a search for instructions outside of this site; there are lots of files about transferring over networks, and not a single one of them appears to even provide correct instructions.

Edit: It just occurred to me that I had not tried copying a file from the wife's computer to mine, which worked just as I hoped it would. I then checked her Documents folder, which was not marked as shared, even though I remember doing that.

I marked it as to be shared with "everyone", surrendered the machine to it's primary user so that she could continue grading papers, and returned to my machine. To my dismay, I still get "You need permission to perform this action" when I try to copy from my computer to hers. This ought to give someone at least a hint as to what to tell me to do that I either have not done or did improperly even after setting her Documents folder to be shared.

In my haste to give back the computer, I did not look at her folder to be certain that it is now shared, but I did see the entry for "everyone", so I suspect that it now is in fact shared.

What folder exactley have you shared if its in a user profile it has specific NTFS permissions which will stop you writing to the folder

Interesting question which I cannot check on now. I do know that it was listed as being on her computer a long time ago and worked then. I will look at it some time tomorrow when PJ is not using it, perhaps around 0500/0600 local, and post another reply.

A while later: I was able to take a look, and found that the Documents folder, which is marked to share, is found in C:\Users\John; "John" as this used to be my computer. In C;\ there is an empty Documents folder.

Again, the folder in Users\John used to work. I make no pretensions about knowing why that was so and is not now. I await your further advice, obviously.

Finally, success. Problem started when I was told that I needed to do something with NTSF permissions, but not told how to do that. This is not a complaint, just a partial explanation as to why it took me so long to fix the problem.

I started searching, and as is all too often true, found a number of sites that, at least for me, were of no use. After making some changes and getting closer, my wife started teaching from home rather than going to school and running remote sessions from there (which made no particular sense). This made it hard for me to go back and forth from my computer to hers, as she was using it not just for her classes but also for correcting papers.

To conclude, yesterday I found one more site that seemed to have the final information I needed, so while PJ was taking a break, I went to her computer and made that NTSF sharing change. A few minutes ago, I copied a file from John-PC2 to John-PC1. (PC-1 was my computer, which I gave to her.)
