how to use wireless adapter with antenna

Hi! I recently bought a Duel Band Wireless USB Adapter. It looks like the brand name is "abgnac." It comes with a USB and an antenna to connect to the USB. And also a small software installation disk, about 3" in diameter.

I need it for my SL510 Lenovo Thinkpad laptop computer. I got it to try to be better able to get on the internet while over at our married daughter's home. They have wireless through a router. Other computers get online ok there. But not this one. This Lenovo Thinkpad laptop computer is able to get online here in our home though. We also get wireless service through a router. I contacted your group some weeks ago about this problem. That's when I acted on the suggestion to try out this adapter. I don't know how to find the previous comments on this. But anyhow, if you can think of some way to explain how to get this antenna system to work, I'll appreciate it!

Hi! Yes, I'm able to plug it into the USB port. But the problem is, that the wi-fi internet at their house (they get wi-fi through a router), still doesn't show up in my list of available connections - whenever I'm over at our daughter's house. And it doesn't increase the number of connections in the list here at our house, either. All I see listed here is our own wi-fi (through router) network, and below it on the next line: "Direct-34-Hp Office.let.pro 6970." So there must be a problem - I don't know what it is.

Hi! I took a picture, but my camera needs to be recharged, it turns out. The antenna screws into the usb adapter. I have been able to connect it to my laptop computer, but it still doesn't increase the list of wi-fi connections - either here at our house nor at our daughter's house. At both places, wi-fi connection to the internet is provided by routers. We both have Netgear routers. I'm including with this message - a picture of the asb wi-fi adapter set I bought from Ebay.

Hi! Not clear? I just thought that getting that wireless wi-fi adapter, would increase the range of connections. I guess I was wrong. Maybe I need to update the firmware on the Netgear router at their house. Do you think so? A Chromebook that our grandchildren used to get online with - is no longer able to get online lately, too, over there. Though other computers are still able to get online there - it's true. I went to the Netgear site, but couldn't figure out how to download the Nighthawk app, that they recommend for the process. I suppose it would be a good idea to call up the Netgear organization, and ask them for suggestions on how to fix the problem. I hadn't thought of that before. I guess I'll plan to do that this coming Monday when we go over there.

Make sure their router is broadcasting the SSID and not hiding it:

I have the exact same adapter. In fact, I have 3 of them - one for my Windows 10 PC, the others for 7 and XP. You need to run the setup from the included mini-CD so it will install the correct drivers. It can be used with or without the antenna although you will definitely get a better signal and find more networks with it attached.

The adapter is based on the Realtek 8811CU chipset and supports 802.11a,b,g,n and AC in both 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands.

I did a search and your Lenovo SL510 has a built-in WIFI. You should probably go into device manager and disable it to avoid conflicts with the new adapter.

On my Windows 10 1903 PC I have disabled the built-in Dell 1397 WIFI because it gave me problems in Windows 10. Here is a screenshot of my device manger:



Check yours and see if "Realtek 8811CU Wireless LAN 802.11ac USB NIC" shows up. Even if it does I would still run the setup from the CD to ensure the correct drivers are installed.

Since you mentioned that another PC is unable to connect to your daughter's Nighthawk router let me offer a suggestion - reboot. I have a Nighthawk that occasionally forgets to allow 5GHz connections. I turn it off, wait a few seconds, turn it back on and all is well again.
