    Home network with Ethernet

Home network problems and ethernet speed continues.

I have 3 computers connected with Ethernet through a router / cable modem.
    All 3 computers are running Windows 10 (20H2) 19042.630
All settings are exactly the same, and they all use the one and only account I have

Still to share files and computers to see each other works randomly. I do have the impression that the computer who is switched on first will show the computer at "network"
Most of the time computer A can see C, but C can not see A or if C can see A and I want to view files I get a message I need to contact the administrator

The same with computer B...........A can see B but B can not see A

I have studied all the suggestions I could find and changed them if needed, but still.............

Transferring files through Ethernet goes with a very low speed. Also for this issue I have studied all the suggestions I could find and changed them if needed.

I really don't know anymore at this moment

    Robbie

What you have to understand is windows doesn't look for PC's it asks the master browser which often is the first of turned on. It can take a long time to mb to find new PC's turned on.

In the meantime you should be able to connect via IP ie \\192.168.1.34\sharename it's NetBIOS that resolve pc by name

samuria is correct, the problem is that Windows will not scan local subnet for PC's often enough for us to see other computers.
I have the same issue, everybody has this problem.

What you can do is to force searching PC's on network, to do so restart "Function discovery resource publication" service.
This will make other PC's see computer which restarted this service but will not make this PC see others.
For this PC to see others other computers have to restart this service.

There is a known issue with Windows 10 not being able to see other systems on the network.

I did the following on each system to fix it on our LAN -

    1. Created a batch file called FDResPub.bat that contains two lines -

    net stop FDResPub
    net start FDResPub

    2. Created a task to run the batch file at system startup in Task Scheduler.

    No issues since.

The simplest way to do network access is to have identical User Ids and Passwords on each system.

Then, in Network and Sharing Center -

    Private profile -

    Turn on Network Discovery
Turn on File and Printer Sharing

    Guest or Public -

    Everything turned off

    All networks -

    Turn off Public Folder Sharing
    Turn on 128-bit Encryption
    Turn on Password Protected Sharing

After that, set the permissions for those users on each system.

Doesn't require users to physically log in to access, but limits who can log in, and what they can do.

I used to have a lot of problems with my three computers seeing each other on my local network but most of the problems went away when all three had Windows 10 20H2. Even then I sometimes have to run the FDResPub batch file but not as often as I used to.

Sometimes someone would say to see if you could ping the other computers. I found that even if you could that would not guarentee that the computer would show up in Windows Explorer > Network. In that case I found that creating network shortcuts to the other computers on my desktop got me past that problem. For example, for a computer called "Roman" the shortcut would be "\\Roman". Eventually if my network keeps working as well at it does now I will never have to resort to using these shortcuts.

I've never had to use shortcuts.

I do use full UNC paths for file synchronization to/from other computers on the network.

    i.e. \\NetworkLocation\DriveLetter\FolderName

For the slow transfer speed, have you tried changing your Ethernet cable(s)?

For the computer that is not visible, have you tried changing these settings?
Go to Services, and change "Function Discovery Resource Publication" from a Manual startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start).

Then change "Function Discovery Provider Host" from a Manual startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start).

That's a popular suggested fix, but I have found it doesn't work consistently.
