How To Make My LAN Printer appear across the LAN?

Well it is not a stand alone LAN printer - it is in fact a HP 3015 USB attached to a computer on the LAN.

But it has always been shared across the lan and usable from anywhere.

MS kindly updated the printer machine and now it cannot be seen across the lan.

I try to get it from another machine across the lan and that machine tells me it cannot get it because 'it has been deleted'.

But I can go to that machine where the printer is and print from it no problem.

So it is working fine. and it used to work fine. and the record of it still exists on the 'other computers'.

But they think it is deleted and I can't print from it.

Is there any way I can fix that?

    Start over.

On the computer it's attached to:

    Delete the printer share
Uninstall the driver for the printer
Reboot then install the driver again.
    Setup the share again.

Try connecting to it from other computers and see if it works.

I can see it now from across the lan. but it won't print. jobs stand in the queue with 'printer error'. I see the printer is on port LPT1 when I see it in the printer queue message box across the lan.
Surely a USB attached printer wouldn't be on LPT1?

But I suppose all the configuring will have to be done on the attached computer and trying there to investigate the printer and its configuration I see no way to set the port to any USB choice.
And it prints fine, still, locally.

And I made it the default printer locally and got a warning that windows will not handle it now. Should I worry about that either way at all or it just doesn't matter?
And what about across the Lan - make it default to those computers or it doesn't matter.

I see no way to stop it being default. You can't undefault it, it doesn't toggle. I suppose the way would be to make something else the default. And if you haven't got anything else then create it just for the job. I've got a few others - all old non-working versions of this printer.
And of course MS print to PDF. :)

I'm still looking for clues if you have them...

Did you do what I suggested?

If so, you needed to disconnect the USB cable when you started the re-install. It will tell you during the install when to connect the USB cable and then wait. Once you plug the USB cable in, the installer will detect the printer and finish the install on a USB port or a WSD port, never a LPT (parallel) port.

I didn't see the update problem of Windows with my 2 HP printers, OfficeJet and LaserJet, because they are connected via Ethernet cable to my Router. Nice part of doing it that way is no computer has to be kept running, can Map/install on any computer that can access the Network or the Internet, just install the software as Networked and let the computer find them.

I looked on the HP site for the model number of yours and see a LaserJet with a Gigabit Ethernet connection. Win10 on various computers has been showing me it actually finds the printers and gives basic support but also a message about installing the software for it. It's kind of an old-school message, shows inserting a CD/DVD.

Ztrucker - no, I haven't done it yet. Been trying to blunder my way into getting it to work without having to start again.

Why? Well because it has always been good before. I've had numerous system crashes, had to build new system disks and so on.. and always got things going without actually doing anything.... win10 did it for me I guess.

So this time win10 is paying me back. I'll do it today if I have to. I'm not ignoring your advice, I'm aware of it and taking note... just trying to avoid the need for it. :)

It's not difficult, just take 10 minutes or so. Hardest part is finding and downloading the driver.

and that shouldn't be too hard. HP generally has good online support in that direction at least - meaning that which can be automated.

In fact perhaps I can use the downloaded driver from last time? Or perhaps it won't be there - never was - all was done online by HP?

the essence of what we're saying here is that the LPT1 port on the attached computer is incorrect and that's the reason why the printer is not accessible from across the lan. Even though the printer queue is.

    right?

and the only way to get the right port setup is to start again. right again?

    that's how I understand it.

I'm interested to know the technicalities of how the attached computer prints to the printer when it is configured with LPT1 - you wouldn't happen to know about that? Could it be there's a 'port mapping' (to perhaps invent a phrase)?

and if there is such a thing how come there's a problem across the lan?

I don't know why, I just know deleting it and reinstalling it as I described almost always fixes these kinds of problems. I've done it dozens of times.

You could try opening Printer Properties and clicking on the Ports tab and changing to a WSD port if there is one but a uninstall/reinstall is quick and haas a much better chance of fixing the problem.

Just do it. Like I said, 5 minutes and you're done, including setting up the share again.

can i do that with a 3015? I think not. I see two ports but they appear to be telephone ports, for the fax function I guess. No sign of an ethernet port.
