Trying to fit an extender for wifi

I have bought a unbranded extender and followed the instructions by typing in the IP address 192.168.1.254 as it said in the instructions but am not getting any hits for it.
This extender was not cheap and I am wondering if I am going about it the wrong way because the device is not even listed in my net connections.

    Any ideas greatly appreciated

Do you have WPS or QSS buttons you can use to connect the extender to the router?

    Hi there
as the previous poster said you have to ensure the computer can connect to the wifi extender first -- doesn't have to connect initially to the router.

The computer needs to see it -- easiest way to do it is either via a LAN connection from computer or via a browser interface (these wifi extenders often have an initial setup that allows you to connect via a browser with an address such as netgear.xxx) and then the setup will guide you through the process.

The wifi extender itself will attempt to connect to the router and normally will by default use names like network_2.4_ext and network_5_ext -- assuming your primary network (initial wifi network name was network1_2,4 (optionally - and you should set it up on your router is to enable the 5GHZ band as well so both these can run concurrently.

Check also that there aren't any wifi disable switches set to off on the extender.

If your computer is near the extender and the extender has at least 1 LAN port it's a good idea to use a LAN cable from computer to wifi extender -- if you don't have one a cheap USB->lan adapter works just fine. Then you can set (at least on decent extenders) the wifi extender to operate concurrently on both 2.4 and 5GHz and get maximum network traffic throughput by setting the adapter (the USB->Lan adapter) to full duplex -- will be much better than bog standard pure wifi from laptop operating at half duplex.

perhaps you can post the name and make of the extender -- and as always R.T.F.M (even if there isn't a printed one there's usually a downloadable version from the Internet.

    Cheers

Hello Fabler yes mate it has a WPS buttons but what it does I have no idea. I think the main problem is getting onto the IP address that are iis the instructions for set up I click on that link but it cannot find the page.
I have ordered another extender (TP Link) which I hope will be easier to set up as I am guessing this may be a cheap knock off device thought at $50 not that cheap either. .
As you may be aware I am not good with networking stuff so am going to wait for the other adapter to come before I try again.

Plug in the extender to a power point near the router. Press the WPS button on the router then press the WPS button on the extender. Check the lights on the extender to see when it connects. Usually after pressing the button on the router let it go then press button on extender until lights show as connected and that's it. Move the extender to where it's needed and check what's available on WiFi. jimbo45 has some good info in his post.

Maybe you can ID the model # from 朗奕迪科技 [pix-link website: www dot pix-link dot com] > WiFi product > repeaters.
