Every update turns off my internet connection?

    (Windows 10 Home x64, v2004)

Every time a Windows update occurs, my Internet connection is lost. I have to restart a second time to bring it back. This only happens on one machine ("System One" in System Specs).

Is there a way to fix this, or is it something I have to live with?

Visit network card manufacturer website to download latest driver if installing latest driver wont work reset network settings.

On Windows 10, you can also use the "Network reset" feature to fix Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity problems after installing an update or at any time that you can't connect to the network.

To reset the network adapters on your device, use these steps:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Click on Network & Internet.
    3. Click on Status.
    4. Under the "Change your network settings" section, click the Network reset option.
    5. Click the Reset now button.

Quality has become a sore spot with these updates. I turned them off two years ago.

I can still manually get the occasional security update.
But "feature updates" are a hard no in this household. I'll be running 1809 until I get my next computer.
It's nice to not have updates causing all these problems.

By the way ... I use "metered" mode to block updates.
That gets set in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\DefaultMediaCost

But some update from Microsoft seems to have locked that key so I couldn't change settings there.
And it turned off the metered settings! Sneaky b@$tards! Beware!
(With admin rights I put things back to normal. I'm metered once more ... and update-free again.)

Tried the Network Reset option first (easiest one to do, lol) but that didn't work. I'll look up the driver first chance I get and try that. Thanks!

I carried out a Windows Restore, to try and speed up a slow laptop, and of course there were a load of Windows updates to install. After this completed the laptop now refuses to recognise the Wi-Fi network that it had no problem finding previously. I've tried updating the drivers and placing the laptop right next to the Router, but it still doesn't see the network. Any suggestions, please?

    a Windows Restore
    - Hi, what's that please? System restore? Windows reset? In-place upgrade repair install?

What was your previous major build (e.g. 1809, 1903, 1909, 2004) and what is your present full build number?

Have you looked at your Device Manager and checked no drivers are missing?
You have a Dell desktop - model/age unspecified.

What is the last version of Windows supported by Dell?

Have you tried using the NIC driver from Dell's list of drivers for your PC?

What icon is shown in your system tray for internet access?

If you double click it, do you see any networks listed?

Have you checked airplane /flight mode is off?
Is Wifi enabled? (See that tile above)
If you rt click the Internet access icon in the system tray and click Troubleshoot problems, what is reported?

I executed a Windows 'Reset, to speed up my laptop, which is an MSi. The laptop can 'see' my neighbours network, but not mine. I have checked for driver updates and have the 'globe' icon in the system tray. My desktop can 'see' and connect to my Wi-Fi network (although it's actually connected by Ethernet)

Again - what is your present full build number? Win key + r, winver

This is a typical issue a good number have experienced with build 2004.

    I searched for
internet shown as disconnected but is connected 2004

You can do that and find more results if you wish. The 2nd offers a possible fix.

Windows 10 version 2004 may show "no Internet" even though there is Internet access - gHacks Tech News
    https://www.windowslatest.com/2020/07/18/windows-10-no-internet-connection-problem/

In a forum thread, Microsoft staff has now confirmed that there is a problem with the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) that sits in the taskbar or the system tray.

If you’re affected or when you get affected, you would see that the internet or Wi-Fi icon indicate that there is no internet connection available.
“Customers are reporting “no internet” access in the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) on Windows 10 2004 devices on devices that in fact can ping internet resources or browse web sites with internet browsers,” Microsoft’s contract worker noted in a forum thread.
Microsoft is actively investigating the problem, and it will be resolved in a future cumulative update.

    - a dramatic step... suggest may have been better to spend a while trying to determine the cause of your problem. I have 2 PCs with Win 10 installed for several years- no change in performance, with probably more installed than you will have.

My version is 1903. OS Build is 18362 1082.
But I think the item you shared from Microsoft probably explains what the issue is.
Thanks for that. I'll probably just have to wait for the next update to solve it.
