In case of intermittent wifi issue laptop can't connect without reboot

    Hi,

I have a HP Envy X360 Convertible laptop running Windows 10 Home (v 10.0.18362) with Intel Core I5 -6200U CPU.
It was fine for the 1st 3 years. Lately for a few months, if the WIFI gets disrupted briefly when I laptop is on, then it cannot reconnect to the WIFI.
If I goto 'Connect to Network' from Network and Sharing center or from system tray icon, there are no WIFI SSIDs' visible.
Only if I reboot my Computer I can see the SSIDs and it automatically connects once again.
I tried going to Network and Internet settings and tried to Reset Network. But even that does not help resolve this problem.

So to summarize the problem once again, when I turn on my laptop , it automatically connects to my WIFI and everything is good. If there is an intermitted WIFI problem and the connection drops then when the WIFI is back up, my laptop cannot see any of the WIFI ssids anymore and so Obviously it cannot connect to anything. So only way it can reconnect to the WIFI is if I reboot the Laptop.

Can you please advise why this is happening for the past few months and how I can fix this ? This never happened for the 1st 3 years that I owned this Windows 10 Laptop. I did not update anything myself other than what Windows my be updating on its own. Please advise how to fix this because it is such a hassle to reboot the VM to connect to internet everytime there is a sporadic drop in the WIFI connection.

    thanks

Hi, solely as a possible workaround you might try disabling and enabling your NIC by command- a small script-
Enable or Disable Network Adapters in Windows

However it would seem there's something else going on here.
Can you please advise why this is happening for the past few months and how I can fix this ?
Driver update perhaps? (Assuming this is indeed a software problem).

I suggest you compare the relevant driver version (shown in Device Manager) you have installed with the latest provided by your manufacturer
    Example:
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...model/13475171
    - you need to choose the correct page for your exact model

and consider installing the manufacturer supplied build and keeping that.

(It's possible to prevent driver updates for a specific device- Tutorial available).

    Hi,

Thanks for your response. Based on what you suggested regd driver update, I went to the link you provided https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...model/13475171
Since mine is an HP Envy x360 m6 Convertible laptop that's the correct link and over there under Driver Network I see
    Intel WLAN driver 21.40.2.2 Rev.P 19.7 MB Sep 16, 2019
However when I goto Device Manager in my laptop and look under 'network adapters', I see "Intel(R) Dual band Wireless AC-7265"
So I donot see 'Intel WLAN driver' that comes up on the HP website in my Device manager.
So what do I do. The HP website seems to be missing the driver for "Intel(R) Dual band Wireless AC-7265". So how do I download the latest driver for Intel(R) Dual band Wireless AC-7265 or what does the absence of this on the HP website mean ?
How would you advise I proceed. Greatly appreciate your response in this regard?

    thanks

Hi, just to check, that link is for a version of that laptop m6-aq105dx. There may be other variants...

that's what I meant when I suggested checking it was the right one.

The WLAN driver would be the one. Hopefully it includes what you see as the driver.

    waavman,

I've downloaded & checked inside that HP driver.

HP are just using a generic term for the network card in their lists. In the individual files within that driver are applicability lists and the 7265ac is included.

Just for future reference, if you did try to install the wrong driver from a reputable source such as HP, the installation process checks the applicability lists then checks your adapter's 'HardwareID' and takes no action if the appropriate device is not found.

    So you can proceed.

And I agree with dalchina's follow-on suggestion of trying to disable then re-enable the adapter. If the fault remains after the driver is reinstalled then try this [it can be decently automated if needs be].

    All the best,
    Denis

    Hi Try3, Dalchina,

Appreciate your response. Here is the confusing thing I am observing.
Instead of searching by Model X360 M6, in order to avoid confusion as there are several variants of that model , I searched by my laptop Serial Number and it brought up the model HP ENVY x360 - m6-w103dx (ENERGY STAR)

For this model when I look up under Network Driver, I notice 3 of them as shown in screenshot below

Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver (Windows 10)
Realtek Local Area Network (LAN) Driver
Realtek RTL8723BE/RTL8188EE 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Drivers

In case of intermittent wifi issue laptop can't connect without reboot-hpnetworkdrivers.jpg

However as suggested by you when I look in the associated files section for each of these 3 Driver files, it does NOT contain "Intel Dual Band Wireless AC-7265"

As you noticed, I can only see AC-7265 as a supported Device in the associated files section for the Intel WLAN Driver listed under HP Laptop model "HP ENVY x360 - m6-aq105dx" which is NOT my Laptop Model. Mine as i mentioned aboe which I got from my serial number is HP ENVY x360 - m6-w103dx (ENERGY STAR) which lists the above 3 Drivers, Broadcom/realtek/realtek which Never list AC-7265 as a supported device.

So I am confused as to what do I do in this case.
Do I download the Intel WLAN Driver from the Laptop "HP ENVY x360 - m6-aq105dx" that is NOT the same as my LAPTOP model because it supports "Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265"

    OR

do I download one of the 3 Broadcom/Realtek WLAN drivers listed under my Laptop Model based on serial number "HP ENVY x360 - m6-w103dx (ENERGY STAR)" which however under associated files, Do NOT even list "Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265" as a supported Device ? iF so which of the 3 do I choose ?

    Kindly advise .

    Open Device Manager.
    Expand Network Adapters
Double click on the WiFi adapter
    Click on the Details tab
In the Property box, select Hardware IDs.
Click on the value that end with the Subsys_ data (not Rev_)
Press Ctrl+C to copy that data to your clipboard.

Goto Google and search on the data you just copied to the clipboard by pressing Ctrl+V to paste it into Google.

See if that matches what Device Manager tells you or if it gives you more inforatin that you can use to decide what you need to download.

An additional option is to use the Intel Driver and Support Assistant:
Download Intel(R) Driver & Support Assistant
