How to determine if a VPN is working

Or how good it is at doing what it claims it does. Supposedly it keeps my internet activity private. But how is this measured?

You could open a command prompt and perform a tracert to a destination.

As an example: tracert www.tenforums.com

Without a VPN you probably see a number of hops locally. In my case, I see a number of hops that reference my local ISP.

Then repeat with the VPN active and you should see something completely different.

Also, when I check my IP address in Google I only see my IPv6 address.IPv4 is not detected.

In Network Connection Details both IPv4 and IPv6 seem OK. Same from IPConfig
