    Trouble connecting to wifi hotspots

Im having a super annoying internet problem, logging onto hotel Wifis. we are on a long roadtrip across the USA, and everytime we enter a new hotel and try and connect to the hotel wifi, the laptop doesnt seem to connect. i try right clicking and Troubleshoot with no luck. the only thing that seems to work is restarting the laptop, then it connects fine.

any idea why this is occuring? anyway to avoid restarting the laptop? i hate doing this all the time.

    thanks in advance.

Hi eugchen and welcome to Tenforums.

You have quite a new laptop there.. Lenovo perhaps? I think I've noticed similar problem with my friend's laptop. Not sure how he managed that.

We'll need exact brand and model of your laptop to be able to give any advice. Most probably a problem with drivers, or security settings of the manufacturer.

Hi eugchen, welcome to Ten Forums.

So you're trying to save the time for a restart? How long is that?

My old work laptop had a HDD and took about 4 minutes.

    Try this, it worked for me;

Open an Admin Command Prompt and type ipconfig / release + enter and then ipconfig /renew + enter.

After reading the reply from @AndreTen, I recall a similar situation when I first ran a new Lenovo laptop. After installing Macrium Reflect and a full backup, I installed a computer security suite complete with AntiVirus, firewall and more. After awhile I lost wireless. The wired connection worked fine. Rebooting recovered the wireless but it was short lived. After much head banging, I found removing the AV allowed the wireless to run trouble free. So now I place my AV trust with Defender and continue to run the independent firewall. Purely anecdotal mind you.

eugchen, this is extactly why I asked about you laptop's manufacturer. AV and other software would be nice to know too...

Thanks xips for sharing your experience

The ipconfig thing is good but don't forget there is a thing on the right-click of an active Wi-Fi connection for the disconnect and Forget, probably a bit easier to use. The problem I've seen when mobile is the connection being remembered and the reboot clears that. Left-click the connection icon in the Notification Area then right-click the connection.

that may be slight exaggeration, imagine there's no more that 932,000 different programs available.

i do that "forget" option all the time, and it doesnt work. ipconfig release and renew didnt seem to work for me.

my laptop is HP Notebook 15-dy1124nr. im not running any antivirus software but Mcafee Livesafe came installed on it. i think its lapsed, since i didnt renew it. i am running a VPN, but obviously that isnt running when i cant connect to the internet.

I would uninstall Mcaffee. Let Windows defender do its work.

Next go to Device manager, in Wifi adapter properties uncheck "Allow windows to turn off this device to save power" .... or something similar
