Download Speed is very slow compared to available ISP Bandwidth

    Windows 10 Pro 2004 (19041.423) - all updated

My ISP has a 56MB/s (poor I know) fibre line to our house.

Every other device connected via wifi or direct (Macbook, iPads, XBOX's, phones) get up to about 40-42 MB/s download which is fine. Very new router too; only 5 months old.

However, my recently upgraded PC is restricting my download to ~5MB/s which is killing me. It's a gaming PC so the downloads are huge and now take forever. This happens both wired and wireless 5G.

I've had this problem for about a month now. I've re-installed Windows from scratch onto a brand new HDD.

Watching loads of Youtube videos and reading all sorts of advice, I still can't get the speed up above this.

    A short list of the main things I've done/checked;

    - Ensured that the motherboard and network adapter has all the latest updates and set to 1GB/s mode
    - Ensured that the Network settings in Win10 don't have any restrictions
    - Ran TCP Optimizer from Speedguide
    - Disabled Large send offload (both ipV4+6)
    - Tried changing ports
    - Rebooted router many times
    - ISP confirms there is no throttling

I think I've tried everything and I'm at a dead end. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, can you confirm that you are downloading from the same source when you make your comparisons?
Every other device connected via wifi or direct (Macbook, iPads, XBOX's, phones) get up to about 40-42 MB/s download which is fine. Very new router too; only 5 months old.

What result do you get if you run a speed check? E.g.
Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

Did this only start after upgrading t0 2004 or after a particular Windows or driver update?

Otherwise if you search the forum for e.g.
    slow download speed
    restricted download speed
you will find plenty of results with more ideas and some individual fixes found e.g.

    Sudden Internet Speed Drop

    Thanks for the reply.

I get this with Steam, Epic Games, Battle.net and generally downloading anything from the browser.

This is the weird part, as I've tried Speedtest and it shows a healthy 47 MB/s. However, when I'm downloading (at ~5MB/s) and I do a speedtest on my phone, I notice that the phone can only get ~1-2MB/s. If I pause the download on the PC, the phone gets the full 47 MB/s.

I noticed the problem when I upgraded my PC as per my machine spec. It was an original Windows 10 Pro fully upgraded. Bought a new HDD and put a fresh install and still had the same problem.

I'll keep looking around the forum, but as I mentioned in my OP, I've run into a dead end.

    I think you are confusing Mb/s(bits) with MB/s(Bytes). Roughly 8 bits = 1 Byte.
Your ISP service is probably 56 Mb/s which equates to 7 MB/s.

That matches up roughly to your download speeds which are usually quoted in MB/s.

    5 MB/s download speed approximately equates to 40 Mb/s.

A Network Card is quoted as 1 Gb/s.

" This happens both wired and wireless 5G."
Those speeds are normally quoted in Mb/s.

An internet Speed Test website usually quotes Mb/s, a game download speed is displayed in MB/s, like Epic Games.

I still make a mistake like that after 18 years of using the internet.

    That's a good point..

I noticed the problem when I upgraded my PC as per my machine spec.
    - and following that, is that comment based on just observing numbers, or finding similar downloads take much longer?

If it's a 'real' slowing down, then

I noticed the problem when I upgraded my PC as per my machine spec.
    - ok, but from what? An earlier major build e.g. 1903, 1909?

If 'real' then have a look at that last link for starters. There are various fixes and causes, depending on the case.

Again, thanks for the reply. I wonder if I am just getting confused with the MB and Mb terminology.

I'll keep looking at it, but you may be right. a 40GB file took just over 2 hours and doing the math, at 5Mb/s it does actually pan out

Check if QoS is turned on in the router.

    If so, turn it off.

Run Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

Post the results here. I just ran it and mine looks like this:

Looks good to me. You're paying for 50 and getting 47.16.
