    Slow Network Speed

I am helping a friend with her old laptop running Windows 10 Home 64 bit and she has a very slow Internet connection, less than 10Mbps on average. She is paying her ISP for a service called Internet 300 which means she should be getting a download speed of around 200 Mbps. I checked out her Wi-Fi connection and everything is setup properly. I connected an ethernet cable and I got the same lousy results.

Next I connected my Samsung Android tablet to her router Wi-Fi and got more than 200 Mbps download speed. So I figure the problem must be her old laptop. To be sure, I connected my laptop running Windows 10 Pro, the latest FAST version and I got the same crappy slow Wi-Fi results. I did not bother testing out the ethernet cable. My laptop works great on my network and gets more than 200 Mbps for downloads and uploads.

If it is not the Windows operating system, what is causing this problem? The only difference is that we do not have the same Internet service provider. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem are appreciated. I may bring her laptop here to see how it work on my network.

Were laptop and tablet connected to the same band and channel? Router may be dual 2.4 and 5 GHz, and Wi-Fi could be set differently.

Just trying to find an explanation..

I would look at the Wireless Network Adapter config.

What is make model of router and wireless card. If the card is an old b type or the router is set to b it would be at that speed if the router is 100 meg only that would effect it on cable

You need to check what this old Laptop hardware is i.e. the Network Card and the Wireless Card.
    Also the Router/WAP hardware specifications.

The maximum possible speed is the slowest hardware component in the route.

I brought that laptop home and it got the same slow speed here. Then I checked for windows updates and the updates took more than 8 hours. The Wi-Fi speed improved a bit, speed test showed around 20-30 Mbps for download which is a bit better than before. This old laptop has an AMD 2-core 1.3Ghz processor with 4 GB ram, so it is just slow. This laptop has other problems which I can't correct. Maybe a reset or a clean install will help but I will tell her it is time for a new laptop.

    Thanks for the replies!

Just to let you all know, her new Asus laptop got 368Mbps Wi-Fi download speed the first try. It still gets about 10 Mbps upload speed but that it because her ISP is a cable company that always has slow upload speed.
