Remote Desktop stopped working all of a sudden for no reason

I have been connecting to my Windows 10 Enterprise machine at work since the beginning of April and have been using it without any issues ever since then. It is my dedicated workstation that nobody else ever uses. All of a sudden, today, twice, it disconnected after which I had to get someone there to go over and reboot before it worked. Now, this has happened again for the third time today. In fact, I was working all morning without issues. This started happening around lunch time. And, now that there is no one at the office, I have not been able to get it rebooted. So, in effect, no settings have been changed on the machine. Unless there was an update today that I am not aware of. And, it is DEFINITELY NOT a change in group policy as we are required to connect using RDP protocol.

Any ideas as I need to use this machine come Monday.

Sounds like you may need to make a trip into the office and look to see if there has been an update done. If so, back it out and defer updates for up to 365 days or turn off updates completely.

Thank you. No, I just had someone on-site reboot it, then changed all RDP-related services from Manual (which had possibly changed during a possible update) to Automatic and it is now purring like a kitten! I also had a backup machine added to my workstation so that should this happen again, I can log into that one. Redundancy always helps.

Maybe look into setting up the office machines so you can send them a network command to boot or power on then (so called magic packet)?

    Glad you found a solution.

Also look at Windows Update History and see if an update was applied. Would be good to know. Think about disabling updates too.

I spoke too soon, Ztruker. That did not fix it!

Since there is not enough time in one's day to poke around, what with looking for a needle in a haystack, I simply rolled back to a system restore point from early July and deferred all updates, and it seems to be working. Some update between the first week of July and last week was the culprit. This is outrageous! An update is supposed to improve things - not break them! Makes me wanna turn to something I hate - a Mac!

I would be running a VPN in conjunction with RDP.
