How to throttle own bandwidth for reduce data consumption during Zoom

    Hello everyone

I've heard that Zoom always tries to provide the best quality sound and video that a user's internet connection allows. This means that users with fast but expensive connections will pay a lot of money for every Zoom meeting, even if lower quality experiences would be perfectly acceptable. Do you know of a way (a simple method inside Windows, or a free/cheap program) that can be used to throttle down (i.e. reduce) the bandwidth (i.e. MB per minute) available to Zoom?

I know there are things one can do to reduce Zoom's data consumption, but Zoom will still try to provide the best possible experience regardless of the financial cost to the user. Wi-Fi isn't free or cheap everywhere.

    Thanks
    Samuel

PS. My own Windows version is 1903 18362.959, but my question relates to Windows 10 generally.

PPS. In the mean time, I've discovered that NetLimiter 4 is simple and easy-to-use and successfully throttles one of my browsers (haven't tested it on Zoom yet, but I have high hopes). It costs $20 after the trial period.

    @ugcheleuce -

There are ways to mitigate this.

Are you accessing via Hardwire Ethernet or Wi-Fi?

I've seen this one, thanks. They give tips such as reducing video quality (which will reduce the consumption from about 60 MB per minute down to 15 MB per minute) and switching off your own video (which saves about 30% of data), but none of those tips will reduce the data usage down to Zoom's recommended minimum of 3.5 MB per minute.
Thanks, but this link is about setting one's connection as "metered", which will disable certain types of updates from being run, and may affect things like BitTorrent, but as far as I can see, it won't affect Zoom.

    Hi.

You should be able to configure the Zoom application to be metered.

    Bandwidth requirements

The bandwidth used by Zoom will be optimized for the best experience based on the participants’ network. It will automatically adjust for 3G, WiFi or Wired environments.

Recommended bandwidth for meetings and webinar panelists:

    • For 1:1 video calling:
      • 600kbps (up/down) for high quality video
      • 1.2 Mbps (up/down) for 720p HD video
      • Receiving 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)
      • Sending 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)

    • For group video calling:
      • 800kbps/1.0Mbps (up/down) for high quality video
      • For gallery view and/or 720p HD video: 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps (up/down)
      • Receiving 1080p HD video requires 2.5mbps (up/down)
      • Sending 1080p HD video requires 3.0 Mbps (up/down)

    • For screen sharing only (no video thumbnail): 50-75kbps
    • For screen sharing with video thumbnail: 50-150kbps
    • For audio VoiP: 60-80kbps
    • For Zoom Phone: 60-100kbps

    Recommended bandwidth for webinar attendees:

    • For 1:1 video calling: 600kbps (down) for high quality video and 1.2 Mbps (down) for HD video
    • For screen sharing only (no video thumbnail): 50-75kbps (down)
    • For screen sharing with video thumbnail: 50-150kbps (down)
    • For audio VoiP: 60-80kbps (down)

That may be, but I don't know how, and my googling into this did not yield a result, unfortunately.
This page gives the same advice as the Cornell page, namely: disable your own video chat and select lower quality video in Zoom.
