    Tethered cell only works once...

Dell 7740, Windows 10 Pro (whatever MS just dumped on us), Moto G7 Power

I'm currently using a Moto G7 Power on Visible (which uses Verizon towers) tethered for Internet (it's a long story, don't ask)

I have NO idea if it's the phone or the laptop.

Boot the laptop, connect the phone, turn on tethering. Works fine. Connects to websites quickly (or as quickly as seems normal), does normal Internet stuff, works. Shut OFF the tethering, take cell phone, go do normal day things. Come back, plug in, turn on tethering, totally SUCKS (I THINK thatÂ’s the technical term).

Whether I use Firefox or Chrome (or as near as I can tell any other browser) it sits. It takes forever for “establishing secure connection“ to go away. Usually, it fails and I get:

    Secure Connection Failed
An error occurred during a connection to testmy.net.

    PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. This happens going into GOOGLE! Or testmy.net, or tenforums.com or pretty much ANY SITE.

    From CHROME I sometimes get:
    This site can’t be reached
    testmy.net unexpectedly closed the connection.

    Try:
Checking the connection Checking the proxy and the firewall
    Running Windows Network Diagnostics

    ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED

On the rare occasions it DOES connect to a site, EVERYTHING is GLACIALLY slow. Put in an address and it sometimes says it’s “performing TLS handshake” with somebody. Then it eventually (we're not talking sub-second here, we're talking 10s of seconds into minutes) connects or fails.

When I was connected to the home network, by wire or wirelessly, this never happened. Even now, at greater distance and a weaker signal, when I can connect to the house wireless this doesn’t happen.

If I reboot the laptop it appears to tether fine ‘til I disconnect the cell phone again for an extended period (if I just shut off the tether for 30 seconds, the laptop is trying to reconnect and when I turn it back on, it does).

If I reboot the cell phone, it APPEARS to work normally.

When the tethering is not working on the laptop, I can go to the same website on the cell phone and it seems fine.

I have noticed that when I turn off the tethering in preparation to taking the phone, the laptop starts a process of attempting to reconnect, 1 second, then 3, 5, 11, and so on – I’m not sure what the progression of wait times are, but I presume eventually the laptop gives up trying to reconnect and then won’t reconnect?

BTW: When I DO reconnect, the laptop often sees it as a new network. I’m currently connected to Network 21. I’m not SURE what causes this either, and/or whether there’s something I should do to make it connected to a “previous” network or what…

I can turn on the cell phone’s hotspot, but that’s NOT a good choice as it’s very speed limited. It DOES appear to connect slightly quicker, but frequently drops and generally isn’t NEARLY as good as being tethered.

I’m FERVENTLY hoping it’s some setting on the laptop ‘cause if I have to do a “chat” with Visible I’ll probably shove something sharp in my eye – it’ll hurt LESS. I’m sure they’re nice folks and they may try hard, but they are NOT going to be useful in this case (or the vast majority of other things we’ve “chatted” about.

Can someone recommend a different forum where I'm more likely to get a solution?

I have exactly this same issue with my Oneplus 3T and Gigabyte Aero 14. The only (temporary) fix seems to be rebooting the phone and starting tethering again.

I am leaning towards this being a phone issue rather than a laptop issue. I did some brief testing tethering with other phones and it seemed to work just fine.

There are a few threads on reddit (one of the few websites that works) mentioning a similar issue, but nothing seems conclusive.

Did you find a solution for this?

Unfortunately not. It SOMETIMES works, but most frequently the phone has to be rebooted. I've been trying to remember to shut off tethering before removing the phone, which helps SOMETIMES, but it's definitely not perfect or particularly reliable.
