Nortons Firewall Prevented Access

Hi Ken, it's Ok, don't worry about it. Alright, it's done. I not only added my Vista machine, but also my Windows 10 while I was at it. So according to what you said, I can go into my Nortons and remove that firewall bypass setting.

Also, the manual says that the change with the address reservation will not take affect until the computer reboots, so I'm about to do that. Thank you so much, I'll let you know if everything is working once I remove the firewall setting.

UPDATE: Just rebooted both computers, and before I did that, I removed the firewall settings in Nortons. Was able to access shared folders in my Windows 10 computer from my Vista machine, which was the main issue, so it's working. Thanks again for the help.

You were doing this change so the device would always have the same IP address so that your firewall rule would always work.


You should still need the rule in Norton.


As I understood it you made a rule based on an IP address. By reserving IP address the Vista machine would always get that address.

Hmmm, well I had asked you if after I make the address reservation in the modem, if I can remove the settings in the Nortons firewall, and I understood that you said yes.

In one of my posts I wrote, "So I assume that you're saying that I would set the reserve in the router's settings? And after I do that, I won't have to do the bypass in my Nortons firewall settings (reverse the configuration)?"

And your reply was, "Once you set a reservation, in router, the router will only give that IP address to that device, no matter what order all devices are powered on in. That is it, no other changes anywhere in Norton or windows."

It sounded like you were saying that I did not need to have the changes in Nortons (the firewall bypass). So that's why I reversed the settings in Nortons. I'll just keep it this way unless I have an issue again. If so, then I'll just add the IP address back to the Nortons firewall settings. Sorry about the confusion.

No harm done reserving an address and they are easy to remove. Just strange that Norton is happy now.

Haha, yeah, as long as Mr. Nortons is happy, that's all that matters lol. I'll definitely keep you posted if any other changes occur with this. Hopefully not, and it will stay as it is now (working properly). Thanks so much again for all of your help.
