USB modem, NDIS, network discovery and numbering

    Hi,

I use a pocket wifi / mobile broadband device (Alcatel Osprey EE40) for my internet, connected via USB cable to my desktop PC.

I noticed that Windows will call it 'Network x' where x is a number that seems to increase sometimes.

I'm sure it isn't a problem but is there a way to make the network stick at one number?
Is it storing a configuration for the previous incarnations, and where, if anywhere, are they stored, please?

The number increments I believe each time you disconnect the cable, in which case OS recreates a new entry.
It may do this upon system restart too.

What you can try is to rename network adapter:

There are many commandlets that let you modify network related things, I took just a quick search but was not able to find one to address you problem, you may want to check it yourself:

Expand reference link, and then expand modules that start with net* such as netsecurity, networkcontroler etc...

    This should work:

netsh interface set interface name="Local Area Connection 2" newname="Local Area Connection"
