    Puzzling Internet Speed

I have used Google Chrome as my browser for many years. Periodically I do internet speed tests. Most, recently have given satisfactory results for my set up with BT Fibre 1 (I think that is the correct name) with a download speed of over 30Mb/s and upload speed of over 9mb/s. I recently changed to Microsoft Edge for my browser and did some more speed tests. I was amazed at the huge increase in speed typified by the attached screenshot. It is only with this speed test provider that these high speeds results are achieved. The other 2 providers shown at the foot of the screen shot have also been tried, usually with results in the mid 30's for download.
My question is how realistic is this high result and if so why do the other providers not give similar results?
My machine is an HP Pavilion desktop unit running W10 version 1909 and for these tests was connected by ethernet cable to my BT Smart Hub 2 router.

    Hi A Gray -

Without a dissertation, I would suggest fast.com or speedtest.net for a more realistic test.
You might also want to verify your service level with your ISP and let them perform a test back to your modem, while the router is disconnected.

There are many routing paths that the tests can take, so perform several over a period of time. Even the time of day!

    Does this help you?

Should tell you in the Router Status what your downstream and upstream sync speeds are, actual will be slightly lower, compare what it says to what your contract is providing.

With all speed tests you have to make sure the test is done on the same server often you can one test and it uses a close server and next time it uses one 100 miles away speed test let's you select servers

That speed test is nonsense, just tried it myself. 22 Mbps, Ping < 1 ms is just impossible as my connection speed is 16.3 Mbps (ADSL) taken from the Modem/Router.

Realistic download speeds are maybe 13-15 Mbps.

My ISP uses BT Wholesale so their test works:
    BTW Performance Tester
Download 13.61 Mbps, ping 30 ms
    That is believable.

The other two I use are:
Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test
UK Broadband Speed Test | thinkbroadband

I prefer Ookla and it allows to keep a record of tests if required.

I agree. The speedtest on Bing with Edge browser is nonsense. I got <1ms ping (impossible), 274 Mbps download (not even close to what I routinely get), and 22 Mbps upload.

Using speedtest.net on Chrome, I got my typical results: 16 ms ping, 473 Mbps download, 18 Mbs upload.

I use an app from the Microsoft store called "Speedtest By Ookla" & it tells me my speed here in the UK for my broadband the same every time without using a browser to connect.

I get similarly implausible results from that particular test from Bing. In Edge it says 145Mbps, and in Firefox and IE it gives 75Mbps.

All the above are wrong, my BT Broadband is said by BT to provide up to 50 Mbps. I find the most reliable test for a BT line is at the BT Wholesale site: BTW Performance Tester (though it doesn't seem to stop downloading and give a result in Edge). In Firefox and IE it gives exactly the results I would expect (and that I have confirmed for myself by watching the speed of a real download in Task Manager's Performance tab).

The best sped test is when you download a large file and watch the speed in task manager

Here is a site to get sample download files:
    Download Test Files | thinkbroadband

Apps and web providers for speed measurement are usually either a hoax or used improperly as others have pointed out.
