I said I use that app because it gives a very accurate measurment speeds without using web browsers.
So (360mb/s / 8) = 47mb in real life numbers
The file I download is 90gb which downloads at a steady 45mb writing to the drive, which is the internet speed.
BT is well known for throttling speeds as you are all still on twisted copper cable & not digital cable to your modem, BT is so far behind in broadband technology, thats why they are so cheap.
Oakla is good one, I use it too for speed measurement, but I don't like the app, it is missing features which are provided on web site.
I don't remember which features since I didn't measure speed for some time already.
So after thinking about it I would the following as others said:
look at task manager while downloading a large file like GPU drivers for example, then look at the hard drive write speed (also in task manager) then times that by 8 to give you the download speed you are getting from your ISP.
One other problem I forgot to mention was when I first upgraded to M350 BB I could only get 35mb downloading as was using AM3 technology but after upgrading to AM4 technology I was getting the full speed 45mb/s (real world measurements).
Speaking IMHO -
All these speed tests are just a rough guide - very rough, in fact. They all vary and that is completely normal.
The best non-scientific test is when you power on and your computer blazes through the internet - it's like The Force - you can sense it.

Thanks for all your replies. It would appear that the result I'm getting in Edge (the first on the list) is false. Could it be that this is measuring the speed from the router to the pc rather than the actual internet speed. I have tried Ookla and like the fact that you can keep a record I'll look into that.
I was using IE 11 for those fantasy numbers with the "Bing Speedtest".
New Edge and Chrome available as well, but there is no point in using those.
All Web Browsers use caching and depending on your settings pre-emptive downloading of Websites etc.
Obviously any good Speedtest has to eliminate those factors.
A ping of < 1 ms would indicate something close, could be your Modem/Router or something else, whatever it is, not what you want.

You have more or less confirmed what I thought. I will probably stick to Ookla from now on as it seems to give a reliable return and I believe you can save the results.
