Cannot uninstall malfunctioning WIFI device after windows update

I'm working on windows 1903 on an older HP System Model NY536AA-ABA 300-1020 all-in-one: the internal WIFI was connecting OK until update in April, now it displayed first "connected; no internet", but now it shows a bang! in the yellow triangle and has message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)Object Name not found."
The hardware ID is : PCI\VEN_1814&DEV_3092&SUBSYS_001515A9&REV_00
The driver showing is a Microsoft driver labeled generically "802.11n Wireless LAN Card".
When I try to uninstall the device I do not get the option "and uninstall driver", afterward it will appear to uninstall [not in the Network adapter list in Dev Mgr], then come right back with the same driver. When I run the driver installer from HP, it gives an option to uninstall the old software, which I elected, and it finishes the wizard ok and says 'mission accomplished', but again, the device just reinstalls immediately, same Microsoft generic driver, and trying to manually update the driver from HP supplied files also fails with "The best driver is installed".

How do I nuke all the Microsoft supplied drivers for it, install the right driver, and prevent Windows from creating this loop again?

    thx

HP System Model NY536AA-ABA 300-1020 - seems to be from around 2009, so you have no guarantees of continuing or compatible operation with Win 10.

    until update in April,
Which update precisely? People get updates at different times for a variety of different builds.

Windows update? Feature update? Cumulative update? Driver update?

    Note this from HP:
Typically, HP stops supporting most products after 10 years. Once a product is retired, the official HP support content (troubleshooting articles, user guides, how-to videos, etc.) for that product is removed from the HP web site. Additional support content may still be available via the HP Forums or from third-party web sites; however, HP takes no responsibility for content authored by third-parties.
I.e. you probably can't download the original drivers from HP. But it sounds as if you may have one.

Let's assume you can install a suitable driver.
You would have to block Windows update from installing one.

One way to do that is to use a free program called Sledgehammer. (Google)
This blocks WU, enables Defender Update, and uses WUmgr to let you manually scan for and approve or hide updates.

If the MS driver is installed by WU that would stop it.

Further: you can uninstall the driver, and manually check for a MS installer and delete that.

msi installer files are held here:

As you can see, if you examine the properties of a msi file, you can see what it is.

I don't know any faster way, but it shouldn't take too long.

    thank you for help dalchina
I think I could make progress if I could actually uninstall the errant device, but windows keeps putting it back, with the failed Microsoft driver. How do I do [as we could in the recent past] a full uninstall of the device AND the driver/s? or what registry keys can I delete to get rid of the default generic drivers so it is impossible for windows to butcher it? I do have the original software but it is an incompatible windows 7 installer. the drivers are intact

I tried setting up a new user /admin account to start semi-fresh but that does not work.
the "update", it appears, was updating from windows 7 to 10 in March.
    pics attached.

none of the msi's showing are the source of the update to windows 10.
I also have later ralink driver packages for the device that are windows 10 compatible [or, they will execute], but they fail with windows message "the best driver is already installed"..... wash/rinse/repeat

this shouldn't be difficult and I feel stupid even asking but in the past, the device manager utility gave us a way out: delete the driver files.

    Hi,

When yiu uninstall the device in device manager you have the option to remove the drivers too.

Look here for info on the original Windows drivers. NY536AA-ABA 300-1020

Also think about using Driver Store Explorer for removing the problematic wireless drivers (Force removal). Caution on use here.

Then install the correct ones before rebooting.

    I assumed
When I try to uninstall the device I do not get the option "and uninstall driver"
meant that check box wasn't shown, but definitely worth confirming that's what this meant.

but again, the device just reinstalls immediately, same Microsoft generic driver
Do you observe an installation process, or is it actually that apparently uninstalling it had no effect, and the driver is still there?

thank you Lottie and dalchina for helping. I've learned a lot since last checkin yesterday.
    - to answer the question, yes, what I meant is that the checkbox option to uninstall the driver files is not there. I don't think anything is being uninstalled, as the original error message on the first pane of Device Manager for the device is "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)"
    - however, I have confirmed [the hard way] that the generic "802.11b/g/n" driver MS provided does in fact work with this device: Driver 5.0.57.0 dated 5/18/2015.

I went a bit OCD and pulled the hard drive, stuck in a spare I had, ran the windows 10 install from scratch. During initial setup the installer pulled that driver [on the blind... the GUI was still in the "Just a Moment..." status] and it works. Much of the rest of this old AMD based Touchsmart is in the ditch but WIFI is working. So I have one or the other problem: If I stick with the drive which has the non-working WIFI, other components work because Windows 10 was installed as an "upgrade" on top of the original Windows 7 installation, which is from HP [and has the Recovery Partition] but it is not activated and will not be. Interestingly, with my MS credentials, the 'install from scratch' effort [not upgrade, "new" on clean partition] auto-activated.

Then, a different post I shall have to make: how do I find the drivers for HP Touchsmart 300-1020 Serial 3CR9511G1K? Should easy: go to support.hp.com, enter the serial, get the drivers, but their site is busted. Tried it on 2 different pc's with 4 different browsers: first, inputting the serial produces nothing: not located. Secondly, I must use Google to search by that explicit model number, then I can get a page on their au site which is for the exact model but is dysfunctional: the link to fetch the correct version of windows [windows 7 x64 is best we can do], is down. Same with USA site. The link was working yesterday, not working now. How to get to their FTP site? So, the Windows 10 auto install of drivers did not go well EXCEPT for the WIFI :) lol.... The system hangs interminably and throws a bluescreen "cannot write to store", and more. So, can't get proper devices installed because of no drivers.

is there a way to fetch drivers from the Restore Image? I don't see a way.....

    - - - Updated - - -

p.s. is this site legit? properly identifies the model and the devices listed.... Download drivers for HP-Pavilion NY536AA-ABA 300-1020 based on PEGATRON CORPORATION JESSE (NY536AA#ABA)

Hi, see para in italics in my first post.

If you have missing drivers for such an old machine, consider:
    - when it was first released, was that with only a 32bit OS or 64bit as well? If the first, and you're now running 64 bits, and it was never supported for x64, you're likely to have problems.

    - try a driver updater tool. Normally I would never suggest one. But this circumstance merits trying.

E,g, Drivermax (2 free a day) has helped me. There are others of course.

UPDATE: kudos, Lottie; Driverstore did the deed after a little work. I basically uninstalled/deleted everything wifi AND ethernet, windows refresh again restored both the embedded ralink wifi and the realtek ethernet, but had the dreaded bang on the WIFI device, so I did a manual update of the driver from local system, and there were two entries for MS provided "802.11bgn" lan cards, with no distinction in the name shown. I picked the second one and installed and it worked. thank you all [and the silent viewers/lurkers who stopped by]
