    Asking for Network Credentials

I have two machines, A and B. Both run W10 1909 as local accounts. Each have the same user name and are connected to the same private network. Both appear in the other's File Explorer. A can access B but when tries to access A it gets an "Enter Network Credentials" message. I've no idea what to enter.

Perhaps having the same user name on each machine confuses the issue.

Will someone please work with me to get around this?

    I will really appreciate help.

Try this for a temporary workaround. Go to Computer B > File Explorer and type \\computername of A.

You should see all of Computer A's network shares.

It is looking for your user name and password on A (assuming you are trying to connect from B)

If it still gives you issue you should be able to open credential manager on B and delete your entry for A and retry.

You can also shutoff the need for password, something I don't recommend, by reviewing this tutorial.

Using the same username on both computers is actually part of the solution so don't change that.

Check that you have the same password set for this account on both computers as well.

Check that the account is an Admin one on both computers.

Then, when network credentials are asked for, you enter this common username & common password.

Sounds like a 'persistence' issue, i.e. A has the credentials to access B 'stored' with the 'persistent' flag set but B doesn't have the credentials to access A stored persistently (or it's corrupted), hence the request.

    Try:

    1. Open Credential Manager (in B's Control Panel, i.e. Start > Search > control > Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Credential Manager).
    2. Open Windows Credentials (on the right-hand side).
    3. Search for (and remove) any credential for A (in case it's corrupt).
    4. Use Add a Windows credential to add a new network access credential for A (by entering the network address [e.g. computername], Username and Password then click on the OK button.

If all goes well, when this completes you can open the credential and should see Persistence: Enterprise mentioned underneath the Password field:

    Hope this helps...

Not sure if anyone's still watching this thread.

I have the same problem as the OP. I have tried all the suggestions, including switching off password protection of files on the target computer (something I'd rather not do) but I still get a request for username and password to access the target m\c from elsewhere. There are no saved credentials on either m\c and I've also tried turning off services for credential management on both systems. Nothing has worked. Does anyone have any other ideas?

If you are not using any VPN's or fancy comm software I would run a network rest on both PC's.

Start > Settings > Network and Internet > scroll to bottom of right hand side > Network Reset

If using VPN's or other special comm software you may have to re-install reconfigure, that is why I asked.

Thanks for the response. No VPNs.

Network reset has been tried - several times.

Still can only access B from A but not A from B.

    Cheers.

An update. I attached another PC to the network and it can access both the originals.

The problem seems to be with m\c B "thinking" it needs to provide credentials to access m\c A when it doesn't

This looks like a registry setting issue?
