Major drops in internet speeds - PLEASE help

I went from ~400 Megabits per second to ~5. I'm pulling my hair out. My ISP is WOW (Wide Open West) of course there is nothing on their end, no outages, no help offered. I have reset both my modem and router several times.

The only thing that has changed recently was me updating Windows 10 (I didn't notice any internet issues after downloading the updates though.. but now a few days later I'm really worried with these speeds).

I currently have the TP-Link AC1900 Router and the Netgear CM600 Modem I have never "updated drivers" or "checked firmware" etc etc on these devices. Nor on my computer. Seeing as how I've never done it I'm at a loss and would greatly appreciate any information and tips you can offer along with HOW to "check the drivers on your router" etc.

    I'm running Windows 10 Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.778)

Again, I really appreciate any help you're able to offer. I'm at a total loss here, and as you can imagine 5 Megabits/second is virtually nothing and my house cannot operate off of it.

    @cctaylor88 -

    Welcome to Windows Ten Forums!

Your ISP does not have customer support?

Have you tried connecting the computer directly to the modem and testing again?

    1) Power down your computer, modem and router.
    2) Connect the computer to the modem directly via an ethernet patch cable.
    3) Power on the modem and wait until it fully initializes.
    4) Power on the computer and test using:

    Internet Speed Test | Fast.com
Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

    Report back with your findings.

    Thanks.

I'm finding when I reboot my PC I may get some vast improvement (going up to 150-500 Megabits) but then after a few minutes I'm once again crawling along. For example I'm now connected directly to the modem, just did a reboot and got 153 down, now 5min later I got 4 down..

Well, you can exclude your router.

Do you have another system you can test with?
I think that this might be something which your ISP needs to address.

One other idea, if you don't wish to contact your ISP...

Make a complete backup of your filesystem for easy restoration later on.
Then do a clean install of W10 and see if there is any difference. If not, restore the backup.

This is a good idea... although I've never made a backup before and Its been several years since I installed Windows I wouldn't even know where to begin to find the key or the disc or whatever it is I would need. I would hate to be stuck with a pc that boots and i get to an old school screen asking me to insert media to install windows which I simply dont have you know?

Then the procedure would be rather tricky...

Download Macrium Reflect (Free Edition) and obtain a small USB flash drive for the reboot.
How old is your system and does it boot from USB?

If you don't know - do not attempt.

P.S. You really need to backup your system!

Two things can cause this if you network card is set to full duplex this sends and receives at the same time and often the of or router can't hañdle it. The other thing is your MTU can be wrong does your ISP use a special MTU?
